Help with buttons - V90 Auto

Hi, a friend in Finland just bought himself a Volvo V90 MKI (’97) and asked me thinking I’m a ‘car guy’ what the three buttons below his gear shift meant. While I was perfectly capable of guessing they were for ‘Snow, Everyday and Wet’ I figured I’d do the un-manly thing and ask for advice. In his own words he hoped E was for efficient but it seems to be anything but as it apparently guzzles fuel. Any advice?

Maybe he's driving too hard in economy mode?

I think the E is for Ebola, going by the bio-hazard interior.

Thanks for that. Cleared it up - turns out he was complaining about poor fuel economy in S mode not E-mode, so he's swapping over. Much appreciated!
