Car reported Stolen now it has gone up in value.
Discussion
Interesting conversation with MOT garage on Saturday.
He is a Classic Ford man.
He owns a rare Escort, only 90 or so made worth nigh on 6 figures, and has owned it for several years.
It was taken away by the police last month.
A previous owner has recently reported it stolen in 2003 and it has been taken pending investigations. Not quite sure why it has taken him 15 years to report it as stolen, but the value has increased over the past few years.....
He has gone back through the last two owners who knew bought and sold in good faith, it has been HPI checked and came up with nothing against it.
Is there a time bar on reporting stolen property ?

Although to report a car stolen after that length of time does indeed sound suspicious

that looks very dodgy - I guess we are assuming that they've decided they want it back, and presume there is evidence they owned it but no evidence it was sold in good faith, and thus can pretend it was stolen.
The million dollar question is how come they just realised 15 years later it was stolen.....................
Had it been stolen from a family lock up, and previous owner has since died and it's in the estate, and they only just noticed it, I suppose it could happen.
smells a smidgen fishy

It's hard to claim on insurance if you don't report the theft to Police. There is no time limit however, since from the OP's account the Police don't appear to be treating his friend as a suspect in criminal activity, it is unusual for the Police to insert themselves in a disputed ownership case. There is a clumsy mechanism under the Police property act but they try to avoid doing that or appearing to take sides. Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
