Mother India on Infirmary Street for really good Indian tapas.

Cadiz on George Street for excellent seafood.

La Favorita on Leith Walk for pizza.

Just three quick suggestions, they're are loads of fantastic restaurants in Edinburgh. Booking tables is probably a good idea.

David.

Scran and Scallie in Stockbridge is fantastic. From Tom Kitchin, but in a pub, and the area is lovely. You'll need to book. Pop into Smith & Gertrude beforehand for some wine.

Go to the Kismot Curry House, don't bother with the menu, order a Kismot Killer. Ignore them when they talk to you, and just sign the random bit of paper they give you. Enjoy your meal!

Or on a more serious note, don't do that! I have had some really nice currys from there in the past, although the bloke behind me who had the killer did not seem to enjoy his as much... People are taken away in ambulances after eating a killer, and gas masks are worn to cook them.

Iris (Thistle Street) and La Petite Folie (West End) - both serve great food, trad recipes with a modern twist - and at a reasonable price.
Indian vegetarian - Himalaya in Newington - all you can eat for a great price.

Ate at Dishoom recently - technically a chain I think since they have restaurants elsewhere but very very good Indian food.

Urban Angels do excellent breakfasts.

Note that popular Edinburgh eateries seem to be fully adopting this trend of not taking bookings especially at weekends so that they can turn tables over quicker. Or only taking bookings for x% of tables. This can result in a lot of standing around waiting for tables which grinds my gears!

I’ve had a few good meals in Time 4 Thai on North Castle Street.

Best burgers in town (IMO) are from the Cambridge Bar on Young Street.

Is that before or after a lovely pint of Deuchars in The Oxford Bar? Never seem Ian Rankin in there yet though.

Bread Meats Bread on Lothian Road does a superb burger, easily one of the best I've had.

Maybe I need to get out more or I'm easily pleased however!

some others have mentioned some, but i'll say them again to back them up:

- hanams (royal mile)- middle east food, BYOB which is a bonus.
- iris (thistle street)- small but great food
- el cartel (thistle street)- mexican food, cant book tables, but they take your name and text/ call when your table is ready
- scran and scallie (stockbridge)- tom kitchins 'gastro pub'
- the raeburn- (stockbridge) great steaks and places to sit outside in the sun
- rollo (stockbridge or broughton street)- lots of tapas style small dishes
- steak (york place)- amazing steaks!
- hamiltons (stockbridge)- nice high end pub food type stuff, gets really loud for some reason
- the baillie (stock bridge)- my favourite traditional pub food pub close by
- papavero (howe street)- small italian, great food, pretty cheap and cheerful

As an aside, I recently ate in 'the witchery' and couldnt have been more disappointed, location/ service was great. but the food was just very average, considering the cost/ name the place has I was really underwhelmed!

Hi Guys, thought Id do a quick update....

Had a great first visit to a great City, enjoyed it a lot.

Messed up a bit on Hotel location, was a bit further from town centre than I intially realised.....

Anywas, from your recommendations, I only managed Mother India...

However - what a fantastic little place this is...we hadant booked but were early enough to get a table.

Had about 5 dishes between the two of us, really, really very good food.

The Railway Lamb curry will stay with me for a long while, a fantastically flavoursome Curry dish, I almost ordered another bowl!

Cheers anyway guys, enjoy your great city and happy, helpfull people....

Makes such a change from London.
