Just to add a bit of positive balance to the world...and because sometimes we need things to actually go right money-wise!

What good fortunes have you had with getting money back for something, or coming into money?

I've had a couple of little wins over the last year or so. Got half my money back for a botched respray, well over a grand. Given how hard it is to get pretty much anything out of bodyshops i was pretty pleased with this, didn't even have to get the court involved.

A tyre fitter supplied me a faulty pair of front tyres (which was proven), refused to refund or exchange, and wanted to charge me for a fresh pair, behaved like real ass****s throughtout. Thanks to my credit card company i got the £350 or so back that I was out.

Shares... My father bought some utility shares for me in the 80s when British Gas, Electricity Grid, Thames Water etc were being sold off. I moved house a lot, lost track of the share certificates and the share companies lost track of me. I was young when they were given to me, and it meant nothing to me then.

My mum was clearing out her loft and brought some boxes of stuff over. Went through them and found some of the share certs. A few hundred pounds had turned in to over £10k...

Does PPI count?

I've always been reasonably savvy around these sort of things, and from a young age would always refuse the extra insurance etc. so didn't think I had any. Nonetheless, I ran my details through various finance people I've dealt with, or could remember, not expecting anything.

Last week I received a 4 figure cheque that relates to a credit card I took out in 1994, and closed in 2001.

On a student night out, getting the requisite £10 out of the cash machine, I found a small stack of notes on the floor.

It was late, there wasn't any way to work out who it belonged to, so we had a hell of a good night out.

£100 was quite a lot in those days, and we all got rather intoxicated.

Does money you found and gave back count?

When I was eighteen I found $2000 in a wallet that had been left on a coach, I handed it in to lost property at the airport.

A few years later whilst at university I found a Rolex Daytona on the dance floor with an inscription on the back. Interviewed people outside the club until I found the owner.

I'm to honest for my own good.

A payout from a critical illness policy my wife had in my name, she didn't think my diagnosis would payout and i didn't realise we had it, a check with my gp and a check with my consultant and then a nice cheque through the door.

had a similar thing 20 odd years ago queuing at a cash machine on a saturday night the person in front walked off, I was chatting and went to put card in and realised £80 hanging out uncollected. Turned round but didn't know who it was (back then in the days when a night out was busy!) so hung around for 10 mins. Nothing. Cheers! A good night had by all. smile

Did you use a PPI claims company or do it yourself?
If the latter, what did you actually do please?

Theft...nice...You could have handed it in to the police or the bank, but both of you decided to steal it. Good on you...

It was the advert with Arnie - "DO IT NOW" that made me check the FCA website - https://www.fca.org.uk/ppi/how-to-check
I knew I'd had various credit credit cards over the years with Egg, MBNA, Natwest, mortgage with Northern Rock and Santander, - the FCA website also has links to make an enquiry direct with the finance provider - https://www.fca.org.uk/ppi/how-to-check/search-for...
I only needed to give them my name, date of birth and the various addresses I've lived at over the last 25 years.

A few emails later confirmed that I had PPI with MBNA - they sent me a questionnaire to complete. As my employers at the time provided full sick pay, that was considered good enough reason to deem the PPI unnecessary.

I'd paid about £900 in PPI premiums back in the 90's, which was refunded, plus statutory interest at 8%

I don't actually know if the PPI claims companies would do anything better or quicker, but I do know they would take a big chunk of the payout. It was surprisingly easy to do.

Finders keepers, losers weepers.

I was queuing to use a cash machine once, when it got to my turn the machine was asking me how much I wanted to withdraw. No idea how but the person before me had put in their card, typed in their pin and walked away. I ejected the card, gave it back and didn't even get a thank you.

Biggest chunk of money I have ever got back was £24 this week from an overpayment on a credit card I closed in December 2014.

Honesty pays. One day you’ll be glad you were honest!

Similar thing, but didn't get to keep diddly...

When I was a student I did a christmas temping job at HMV in Kingston for a few weeks, during my lunchbreak I nipped out to grab a tenner for a dirty bratwurst from the German market they had on there, queue for the machine was fairly hefty so I knew I'd be cutting it close. The very well-to-do middle aged lady infront of me at the cash machine walks off, leaving £200 hanging out of the machine; being the gent I am I grabbed it, jogged after her and said something along the lines of "'excuse me, you left this hanging out of the machine" - to which I was rewarded with a tirade of abuse - couldn't fathom why or what I had done to deserve that, I can only assume that the shock of her own stupidity made her lash out?

Either way, by the time I rejoined the bloody long queue and got my tenner and subsequent bratwurst, I was 5 minutes late back to the st-shack that was the HMV stockroom and got a bking there too! .... that was almost 20 years ago now - still waiting for the good karma to come along....

For quite a few years I've been doing contract work (finance/banking) so sort of self employed limited company. in the past I've had permanent full time jobs, particularly with two giants of the game.
Last year I hit 55 and had a few gaps in my work, through choice, I'd also have enuf of the grief that goes with and was thinking if I could scrape by. Tricky. However, I started getting stuff in the post from these two old employers saying that now I hit 55, what did I want to do with my pensions?.. eh? Now I never paid ANYTHING in, they did tho back in the day and they have been performing ever since.

This July I will be getting a tax free lump sum and about 700quid a month....for life... F@£K me!

(FYI.. lump sum not enuf for a Lamborghini, but handy none the less)

£550 return backing Manny Pacquiao to win at any time at 11-1 a few years ago. Skybet must have put the wrong odds up but they paid out.

Did reasonably well with Betfair:

Shares: I worked for them for 5 years prior to the float and they allowed us to buy shares in the company at £2.17 to a maximum of £300 a month for 3 years. IPO price was £13 and I cashed out. £40k profit approx. Had gone halves with my sister but still did OK.
The company paid me £5k relocation when my job moved to Stevenage from Hammersmith, too. I stayed in East London and bought a motorcycle...then they paid me £10k to relocate to Malta, which was nice.
