Anyone know if this is true or I'm being fobbed off. Currently being offered 1k under book for my part ex when other dealers have offered close to 1k over and being told that a second year warranty is 'impossible' despite me having got one from 3 different BMW groups over the years. Seems unlikely to me. Also a service plan is impossible unless the car had it from new...

It amazes me how little knowledge there seems to be about this amongst dealers.

I've got a 2 year warranty on multiple occasions (Including from a Sytner branch). I didn't need one on my last AUC as it was a year old but I got talking to the sales guy when I was picking it up and it came up in conversation and he seemed genuinely amazed it was possible.

It's a great sales tool because its worth more to the customer than it is the dealer - so they get to give away more value than it costs them?!

Can't do / won't do.
Both manifest in the same way and there is nothing you can do to force them. Except....
Walk out the door and buy a car from somewhere else.

The 2nd year warranty has an invoice value of approx. £300. I got it from Sytner Leicester.

Confirms my suspicions then. I even asked if they would sell it to me at cost price as part of the deal - no impossible, the sytner group have no access to extra warranty! Shame as the car was perfect.

I’ve had it on 2 different occasions

Sytner high Wycombe
Cooper Reading.

I’d negotiated everything and then when nearly signing I said tell you what push me over the line give me the extra year and it’s a deal now. (I said that to the most recent one and something similar on the first).

Sytner High Wycombe refused to give me an extra year on the warranty when trying to buy an M5. Even when I asked for them to just quote me to self pay they wouldn't budge.

Similarly, Vines Redhill Mini wouldn't chuck in the second year but after some work finally agreed to let me buy it through them - it was much cheaper to buy the extension through them than if I had bought myself. No idea why I had to negotiate to buy something...

I think it all depends on the person you're dealing with - it was the Business Manager at Vines that finally relented, the dealer himself admitted he had no idea that this was possible.

It's truely bizarre isn't it. There is no downside to the dealer - they sell a car, they give away a 'big discount' without needing to give away much margin and they increase the likelihood of getting work on the car in the second year!

But they want the work at full price, not warranty price!

Service pack can be purchased any time before the cars first service.
Not as cost effective as it was last year, so check figures.
Don't think you have to buy it from supplying dealer - go elsewhere.

Some 5 years ago, when tyre insurance was less available, I bought a car from Sytners. They wouldn't sell tyre insurance to me, as they didnt do it. I understand Coppers didn't do it either. My local Rybrook dealer was more than happy to take my money though, and I assume he got a bit of commission too. It was BMW insurance, not farmed out. Odd.

I doubt they get much general repair work on 5+ year old cars.

The comment about the warranty rate is spot on.

In my experience the dealer was quite happy to quote for work which didn't need doing when they thought it was not covered by my mondial warranty, yet they pushed back and cut corners when it turns out the work was covered. The retail labour rate is more than double the warranty rate AFAIK.

Just a thought, but if other dealers are offering close to "1K over" why don't you sell it to one of them? banghead

Why is 2nd year warranty an issue, or is the car more than 2 years old?

I bought a service plan on my pre-registered 123d as I did it at 17K miles so before the 1st service was due (even though it was a pre-reg).

I had to pay to get my second year warranty at Coopers Reading mind you they had dropped 2k off in the sale. I did buy a second year off them in the end, pushing it through the business and claiming the VAT back it was not to bad. It did have a service pack on it so that was a bonus

Because they aren't offering to buy it off me it's a part ex offer but the cars weren't right for me...

Anyway didn't buy the one from sytner but looks like they've shifted it. I wouldn't mind if they told me they wouldn't give me more warranty but the deceit it's unfortunate.

I'm picking up AUC M235i tomorrow from Sytner BMW dealership and initially sales guy said they can't offer it, when I insisted, he checked again and they offered me 2nd year warranty at cost of £300 which I was happy to take considering Mondial one is nearly twice that and with excess. Looking forward to collecting the car!

Same here - bought a 2011 F11 530d from Sytner High Wycombe back in February last year. Given it had 75k on the clock when I bought it, I insisted on a 2nd year AUC warranty. Was initially told they couldn't do it, then a few days later they offered to do it for 500quid and when I walked away, I got a phonecall about a week later offering to do it as part of the deal. Deal was done and I've since rinsed 4k from the warranty on new rear suspension airbags and compressor in the second year of ownership.

I've negotiated second year AUC warranties now from Sytner, Elms, Dick Lovett, Harry Fairburn and Grassicks over my last five purchases.

With the exception of Grassicks who mostly used to offer 2nd year AUC warranty as standard, everyone else will tell you they can' t do it, but when under pressure to close a sale, it magically becomes available.
