Monmouth to Northampton
Discussion
I just put in a few places to consider going through/via and this showed up.
Directly through the Costwolds though I would consider carefully what time of day

Driven that route (more or less) many times: +1 for avoiding any times when shops are open.Directly through the Costwolds though I would consider carefully what time of day

For even more "country roads", we tend to do Milton Keynes / Gloucester via Deddington / Croughton as a variation on the above, slower but nicer views.
Need a bit more info, such as time constraints, or places to visit en route.
This is a nice route, wide variety of roads and past Toddington is an interesting route up the cotswold escarpment. FYI I've topped 55 on that hill

It's an extra hour on the journey time, but nice roads, good scenery, and a relaxing drive. Unless you get stuck behind a horsebox....
Have a fiddle around with the map and drag markers around, see what floats your boat.
