Hi All,

I am hoping someone can help. We have a S-Max and when you hit a pothole or sometime a speed bump there is a huge bang that comes from the rear as the wheels hit it. I though it was something to do with the suspension but having taken it round to a mechanic and after a ride out he suggested there was nothing wrong with the suspension and that it was in fact the tyres that are causing it? It has 225/5017 on at the moment. He says that as they are low(ish) profile and very hard that the bang is transferred through the tyre etc. I understand and agree with this, but just wondering if anyone else has found this to be the case and what they did to fix it.

He suggested a softer type of tyre to help take up some of the bang (if that makes sense??) problem is I cant seem to find any tyre brand that says it is soft or hard? can anyone suggest a good soft tyre I could swap too?

Thanks

1 post in over 6 years!

Top lurking!

When I go over speed bumps at about 60 I get that too!

Give us a bit more info!

What speed, what sort of bang, as above any car will bang over speed bumps taken unsympathetically, that doesn't mean there isn't an issue.

50 profile tyres are not low profile IMO - 35, or 30 yes but not 50 - so I'm a bit surprised that was the mechanic's best guess

If he has ruled out suspension I can't think what else could be the cause. Are your tyres over inflated and hard as rocks?

Assuming you have ruled out the obvious, like an unsecured spare wheel in the boot (if the wingnut has come loose there could be a bit of play. Worth checking.

What size tyres are fitted on the front wink

Normal culprits if the front rides fine but there’s a big bang from the rear would be shock absorbers gone causing the car to hit the bump stops
