Been lurking Autotrader for a while now looking for a nice MK5 GTI, been to see a couple too, but haven’t found the right one yet.

To my amazement my dream GTI pops up this morning, 10 miles away from home and in stunning condition.

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

I’m 90% sure I want this car, however, it’s a 2005 with 80,000 Miles on it. Sure it looks immaculate, but Autotrader value the car at £4100, he’s asking £6250! It isn’t overly highly spec either.

What would you do? I’m sure when he made the advert he saw the £4100 suggested price, but obviously chose his own price! I know Autotrader are a bit harsh on their valuations, but there’s a 2007 with 90k for £4000!

Do I just wait? do I email him and potentially offend him with an offer? Do I go and view it and not mention the price?

Thanks
J

Christ almighty!

I hope i'm wrong, but FFS are you really that much of a snowflake?

If you want to go and look at the car, go. Check it out and bid the bloke what you are prepared to pay. If you need to justify yourself, point out the other 90k £4000 car. If you can be bothered.

Or are you afraid the nasty man will use nasty words that will hurt you when you offer him money?

Jesus wept.

It's his car to price however he wants to. If it's above market value then that's up to him, he may well have just advertised it on a whim just in case someone is willing to pay that amount.

If he won't budge on price and it's over the amount you're willing to pay then you'll just have to move on and find another one. You can't force him to lower the price, and to be perfectly honest, if it were my car and i had someone message me about "'xyz' car priced way lower than yours etc.", i'd simply tell them to go and buy that one and would stop talking to them.

Completely agree with you on mentioning the lower priced car, don’t think it will help one bit. I think I am going to arrange a viewing in a weeks time when he realises he’s asking too much.

Why will he think he's asking too much in a week's time if he doesn't think he is now?

It wasn't intended to be helpful. But i truly wonder how these people exist in the real world when they need to start a thread on an internet forum like this.

Do you seriously think that if it doesn't sell within a week, the vendor will suddenly drop his price?

I sincerely apologise for asking for advice on buying a car on a car buying forum.

Keep an eye on the advert for a couple of weeks whilst scanning around for alternative purchases. The price on your fave’ car will drop when the seller realises his way over priced, then you can consider an offer on his revised price. That’s what I would do anyway.

Thank You, the kind of advice I was hoping for rolleyes ! Happy to pay a little extra over average assuming it’s in the “great condition” he claims it is.

I have noticed at work that some people will actively avoid communicating with others. I think they’re afraid they won’t get the answer they’re hoping for so they’d rather procrastinate until something forces the issue.

The phone is a great invention, there is a human being at the other end of it. In your case, OP, he wants to sell his car and you want to buy it.

You think it’s overpriced but how are you going to open a dialogue without ever making contact?

I'm looking to sell my mk5 golf gti.

It's immaculate and I've put it on sale for 6k but there's some geezer wants me to sell it for 2k less because there's apparently a shed for sale for 4k, 200 miles away.

How can I get him to understand it's immaculate and worth every penny

This is what I am asking, do I show interest in it now 5 hours after he posted the advert making him think he has a potential buyer for £6250 and in turn he won’t even drop the advert price a week later after having no interest, eg to £5500? To be honest I reckon the most it’s worth is £4500! If I arrange to view it tomorrow for example, there’s no way he would accept £4.5 if he’s expecting £6.2k, but let’s say he drops the price in a weeks time to something a little more realistic eg £5500, an offer of £4500 might not be that bad to him?
