I don't mind buying used stuff usually. Used camera gear, used motorbikes, used toys for the kids.

But I bought the first used car for a while and I hate it. I wish I'd bought a new one. It cost 70% of the price of a new one (car was about 18 months old) but it is 100% pi$$ing me off. I wish I'd got a new one for 100% of the new price and it would 0% pi$$ me off, because it would be exactly what I wanted.

Anyway, what stuff do you like to buy new and what do you buy used?

New == pants.
Used == cars.

What is it you hate about the car?

cjs racing.

Underwear has to be new, anything else I'm quite happy with used.

Basically, it's still an expensive purchase as it is a 18 month old X3. But it's used, so it is what I could get not what I would have bought if it was new. I didn't think there was anything wrong with the old car other than it had 100,000 miles (but owned from new and exactly what I liked) on it and Mrs Puff decided it was unreliable on that basis. So I've coughed £30,000-odd on something which to me isn't as nice as the old car which wasn't costing me anything.

I'm looking as cheap used camera stuff on eBay now to make me feel better wink

Used cars all the way.
Only ever bought one new when I was 18 and lost a shedload of money over three years paying it off compared to what it was worth after that time. MG Metro. hehe

Happy to buy most things secondhand, but I do draw the line at shoes. It always makes my skin crawl when I see shoes in charity shops. hehe

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but did you really buy a car with 100K miles on the clock for 70% of the new price?

And if that is correct, have you seen a doctor?

I think he's saying that the old car had 100,000 miles on the clock.

No, the old car I had was bought new, then I put 100,000 miles on it.

For its replacement, I wish I'd paid 100% of the new car price for a new car, instead of 70% of the new car price for a used car.

Ah. you've misdiagnosed the issue. It's not the fact that it's used that's the issue... you're experiencing a sub-set of buyer's remorse as you discover that you've been taken for a mug.

I have a very simple rule which has always served me well: no used car is worth more than ten grand.

I think you perhaps made do with what was available and should have waited a little longer for the right car to come along that matched the specs you wanted.

I've bought one new car in my life. Did it make me feel ultra special? Nope. A couple of months down the line it was just as used as anything else and I'll have thrown plenty of money away.

As for everything beyond food and thongs, not too far off everything I buy is used. In this day and age virtually no one wears anything out. They chop it in for the next bit of instant gratification with no wear or tear detectable.

Is it atleast an M Sport?

A quick check of autotrader brings up this 16 plater with 15k miles for £22k.
Which does seem to make yours quite expensive..

Is that pretty standard now? Mrs S needed a replacement car quickly so I started looking at nearly-new VW Tiguans. I was amazed to find you had to go back to cars 12mths old before they were cheaper than the discounted new price. And the dealers wouldn't budge on the price of the used ones. Who on earth buys them? Dealer got us a new one in a week so it's not like new was unavailable.

Yet I'm running a 2005 Merc that I bought at 5mths old from what was then Mercedes Direct. It was £36K new list and I paid £23,500 - 65% of new. And I was only looking at used as new ones were on 6 mths+ lead-time so there were no hefty discounts.

I guess it's people who can't wait for a new one to be built/delivered etc.
