Auti S5 (17/18) gearbox
Discussion
I bought an S5 Sportback 12 months ago and absolutely love it......other than the gearbox.
Coming from a DSG prior to the tiptronic I found the geabox was like going back 10 years! Jurky, slow etc.
I used to find that when slowing down, be it coming into a roundabout, junction, car in front etc etc and then feathering the throttle to get going again........nothing would happen, then all of a sudden when I gave it a little more, it would drop 2 gears and it would shoot off. Really quite jerky when changing gears at low speed and just a sense of being old technology.
More of an FYI for anyone else that may have an S5, that Audi have finally released an software update for the gearbox and since I have had it done (only because I asked) I have felt a noticeable difference.
All in all I am very happy with this change and anyone else who has minor frustrations with the new tiptronic gearbox, call Audi and get it updated!

Are they a more "traditional" torque convertor 'box then?
Having a software change, or sometimes even resetting to factory defaults and letting it re-learn (they use fuzzy logic to sort of adapt to the driving encountered) can help.
Of course, if you're going to ask a 'box to do performance things, then it's a lot better to put it into the manual override mode and do it yourself (my mrs 120d - 2005 model with a ZF 6 speed 'box has a "D-sport" mode, which is selected when you initially move the shifter to the side but dont start selecting gears yourself; upshifts are at a higher rpm s it will hold onto a gear, downshifts occur at 1500 rpm, all in all it's a nice feature because, to be honest, shifting manually is a bit odd due to the delay from when you shift to the 'box actualy shifting)
I like the DSG 'boxes though, only been a passenger in a couple of audis with them fitted but they are lightning fast and every bit as smooth, if not smoother, than a toque converter 'box.

I came out of a 15' Golf R with the 6-Speed DSG and to a 3.0 TDI A5 Coupe in 17' on the new shape.
The Gearbox in mine is as you have described in the S5. It is slow pulling out, then surges in one big go....if you slow down and then try to pull out at say...a roundabout, it once again drops all power and then gives a huge surge....
The older DSG in the Golf R was miles better.

Always love reading my own posts back when I can't spell and the grammer is wrong!!
Perhaps they have done a software update for your A5? Worth a try with your local dealership?
My wife has a new GTD Golf with DSG and its sublime, way way better than in my S5. Such a shame they did it and assume its down to cost.
