Afternoon all,

I'm approaching new car time (new to me). A change in job has seen my milage go from 24k to about 16k a year so I can afford to lose some MPG from my current ecobox.

I spend a large amount of time on 60mph A roads driving like a granny but occssionally get to enjoy some Suffolk back roads.

Looking for something that can;
- waft along comfortably
- get 45mpg without trying (under normal conditions)
- has a good bit of overtaking grunt and in-gear performance for getting past tractor boys.
- isn't tiny (can get Mountain bike in with relative ease)
- won't throw up huge unexpected bills

Now, I'm a serial researcher and for every idea I explore, the internet informs me the model in hand is a 'ticking time-bomb' and 'avoid at all costs'. Perhaps because they're all diesels.

Current options are;
- BMW 325d (probably the most desirable, albeit expensive)
- VAG 2.0 TDI 140/170 (think Seat Leon FR, Golf GT, Octavia VRS)
- M47 3 series (320cd is pick of the bunch)
- Volvo 2.4D (unlikely to get 45mpg but 5 cylinders!)
- Saab 1.9ttid (left field and 2 turbos)

Would appreciate any help and advice, new contenders or criticism.

Thank you very much for the links, super handy.

Was completely unaware of the 2.7 Audi lump. Will look into that. Mondeo also looks like a lot of car for the money
