Do I need stitches?

Had a tape measure pulled through my hand this morning and it’s cut a deep hole between my thumb and hand.

I can’t be bothered with going to A &E but I’m not sure if it will heal on its own or not.

What do you think?

Ouch that makes me cringe just seeing it. Done similar injuries many times.

It will heal naturally but you will be pulling the wound open every time you use that hand so you will need to baby it for a while. I don't bother with hospital either.

Pop in to a Chemist and show the pharmacist.

My wife did something similar and we bought self adhesive would closures to keep it together. They worked well.

Keep it very clean to stop infection. Any sign of yellow appearing then get some antibiotics quick!

Pharmacists are a great resource and very easy to access.

Clean it, then superglue it.

Thanks for the replies. I might see the local pharmacy tomorrow if I’m still not happy with it.
I’ve currently used a homemade butterfly stitch to hold it together for now.

No need for stiches but it'll need to be kept together while it heals. Steristrips are ideal for this kind of thing.

That’s what I would do too.

The only thing you have to make sure about is that you don’t get the glue too far into the tissue as superglue drying is exothermic.

So close it and glue rather than fill it with glue and close and you will be fine. It doesn’t last that long though IME due to sweat and movement.

I’d be tempted to strap my thumb to my forefinger as well to reduce movement.

Superglue was invented to seal wounds!

It was invented and abandoned by a guy trying to design clear plastic gun sights though. And later invented and developed by a guy designing a polymer for jet canopies.

It was used in Vietnam for wounds, but not invented for it.

Got a video somewhere, skin is incredibly hard stuff and really is leather, really hard to get a suture needle through!
