Head unit install
Discussion
Some photos of my CDR-30 replacement with a Pioneer AVH-Z9100DAB. Install done by Audiofile in Bishops Stortford (very happy with it).
Note that the reflections when actually looking at the unit in the car aren't nearly as bad as the photos suggest! Still might get a matte screen protector for it though.
Removable faceplate -

Annoying stick on DAB ariel...works pretty well but not quite as good as the proper amplified "stick" on the kit car. Found I didn't notice it when driving -

Home screen showing the connectivity. It connects to pretty much everything!

2*USB connections. One for CarPlay, the other for Android Auto, either can do a USB stick. The fitters bothered to run the cables through the console into the same place the old aux in connector lives -

Android Auto works well, home screen/Waze/Music -

One of this particular units selling point is wireless screen mirroring from Android over the units built in wifi. In this case I was testing OBDLink and YouTube playback, neither of which you can do via Android Auto or Appradio. A little bit laggy but usable -

The head unit is fantastic. Light years ahead of the old CDR-30 both in terms of connectivity and sound quality. There is now sufficient headroom to get some half decent bass from the stock speakers. I just have the VERY basic stock speaker install, no amp with 1*6 1/2" and 1* tweeter per side. It will be interesting to see how long the stock speakers last with at least a doubling in power output!
Really happy with the install, very neat and tidy.

Interesting
I’m having a Pioneer AVIC F88 DAB fitted my Cayman GTS tomorrow. Replacing the old tech PCM3.1
I had the unit in a previous car,Toyota GT86. Apple CarPlay is such a great concept and the option of 2 USB outputs allowing phone and iPod connection was really nice.
I’m hoping we can connect to the stock Porsche DAB antenna.
Halfords fit for a standard charge of £30. Before there are shouts of don’t trust em the local guy is very knowledgeable and careful. He knows his stuff. Fitted the same unit to the last car and I was really impressed. He’s probably too good to be working for Halfords but that lucky for me.
Here’s hoping I not getting ahead of myself but I’ll know in 24 hours.

Nearly went F88DAB, some really good deals at the moment as they are now being replaced.I’m having a Pioneer AVIC F88 DAB fitted my Cayman GTS tomorrow. Replacing the old tech PCM3.1

That's interesting. Will it be playing through it's built-in amp, or through a Porsche SPP or Bose amp?
Looking forward news!

Luckily for me my car doesn’t have Bose only Sound Plus or whatever Porsche call it. Apparently I’m told connection to anything other than the basic PCM is difficult due to the link to an amp with fibre optic connections.Looking forward news!

TBH the stock head unit sound output is pretty good so no amp doesn’t bother me. Road noise and that sublime engine sound almost make trying to improve the sound is a waste of money. It’s the interface I’m trying to improve.
Reference the "annoying aftermarket DAB antenna" then, for those with a fixed rear side window (Cayman or 911, but not Boxter) then that's a really good location for it. Unobtrusive (just behind the B-post or the rear of the passenger's door glass) and works really well. Get's it off the windsceen!

Not a bad idea. If it goes back on for speakers I might get them to shift it...Still waiting for a drive to work in Nottingham (which work very kindly pay me for...Getting paid to drive a Porsche, doesn't get better!) to decide if I need anything else.James
