Hello was wondering if anyone could help me basically I put my car through its mot today and it passed, but after taking it for a 1h drive noticed that it's leaking coolant from the reservoir lid if done some research and it says it's something to do with the head gasket but would this really pass its mot with a head gasket leaking? or would it be a totally different issue the coolant reservoir is filled correctly and I have just recently had a scrap yard one fitted a couple of days ago idea what this could be please let me know coolants just coming out of the lid but only more on longer journeys not too bad for small trips

Unless coolant and/or oil is pissing out then of course it would pass an MOT.

Take the oil filler cap off, is there any "mayonnaise" on it?

If not, your head gasket is probably fine

Not always. I had a head gasket go that just pressurised the water system. No oil contamination at all.

If the head gasket has failed between the cylinder bore and the water jacket you will get the symptoms you’re describing but the oil and water generally won’t mix. A decent garage can test for combustion gasses in the coolant. This will tell you if the gasket has failed.
Why have you had to replace the reservoir?
Is the radiator fan working?

Depends on where the gasket has gone. There will not always be water in the oil.

I wouldnt point at a head gasket that quickly. I would get a sniffer test done and a new cap and go from there. The caps do fail after a time.

Garage sniff (gas analyser) test will tell you or DIY test:

Why did you have a new reservoir fitted?

As above, it's most probably the pressure cap but you can try the test for peace of mind smile

If the water is bubbling, it’s probably boiling because it’s not being cooled effectively. There are several reasons for this, none of which can be diagnosed properly without seeing the vehicle but you can check the basics. Is the radiator fan working?

Which bit of "probably fine" was difficult for you?

You're right. Not always. But then that's not what I said.
