I think planes came at the right time for humanity, in particular commercial airplanes with jet engines. The first commercial flight was in 1914, this probably got off the ground because there was a lot less bureaucracy in the early 20th century, less things to get in the way of progress.

Then the planes as we know them today came along. Countries were rebuilding from the after effects of war, great progress was made in technological advancements some as a result of the war itself. Couple this with the space race and it really was a golden age for new tech. If commercial jet engine planes were not introduced at the time they were but within the last 20 years I really do think the idea would not have taken off.

So it really was the right time and place. Any other examples you can think of?

Canals. Other than a few leisure trips, pretty pointless now.

The Dome. Strange place to site a UK landmark.

Hadrians wall. Should be much further South, just below Luton.

Countless things we take for granted if they were introduced today wouldn't get off the ground. They're part of the furniture now so they go unquestioned but if you proposed them from scratch it would be a very different matter. Also many original purposes are now irrelevant such as canals.

Can you imagine alcohol or smoking being invented and welcomed as wonderful developments?

I'd go with cathederals. Amazing how far the church has fallen in less than a century.

Newcastle and Glasgow subways. I'm guessing they were cheap-as back in the day with all of the miners the country had.

Some of the victorian aqueducts.

The Humber Bridge.

Fort WIlliam or any of the castles, I guess.

A decent rail system connecting the northern cities.

Airfields. Lovely areas providing a home for nature, now considered ideal spots to concrete over and create housing estates.

Any interesting and/or elaborate bridge. Cost outweighs design with most public engineering projects now. It’s easier/cheap to put st cladding on an old building and claim it’s been modernised than do something genuinely interesting.

What are you on about? Which cathedrals have been built in that time? Which "church" are you on about? Most cathedrals in the UK were built by Catholics.
