PCM UPDATE....
Discussion
Version 4.76 is still (July 2017 - as far as I know) the current, latest version of the operating system for PCM3.1 - but note that map updates are a different issue.
If you have a fault with your current PCM o/s then your OPC will likely perform an update to V4.76 without charge if your car is under warranty or extended warranty. The whole process takes less than an hour, I believe, and is not CD based but is performed by hooking-up the car to PIWIS.
If you ever want a map upgrade, the chances are that you will need to pay for this. Map updates are, indeed, carried out via a set of CD's (but there may also be a need for the car to be coded to authorise the new map data which, again, would mean a PIWIS session; sorry that I can't remember well enought to be sure on this particular point).
A common problem with pre-V4.76 operating systems is for the PCM to randomly and suddenly switch off and self boot... Rather irritating. If you have ever experienced that problem, I would expect it to be a sound reason to ask for an update foc under warranty. V4.76 is known to fully resolve this problem.

Digging some more.
It appears that I first need to obtain the discs for the FW update? and then use PIWIS to activate it on the PCM 3.1.
I am confused. Is this true or not?
You know - I think you may be right... Having difficulty remembering the process but the approach you have identified does sound plausible. It appears that I first need to obtain the discs for the FW update? and then use PIWIS to activate it on the PCM 3.1.

Maybe you can confirm on here once you've bottomed it out?

If your PCM3.1 is software version 3.xx it won't update to 4.76. it will update to 3.43 (IIRC), but that will do the same system updates as 4.76. Only software 4.xx will update to 4.76. The update is by DVD in the head unit, and you don't need PIWIS to do it.
Unlike PCM3.0, you can update 3.1 without doing a map update. The "latest" maps are 04.2015, so maybe worth waiting for a new release?
To update the maps, you have to update the system software, enter an Activation Code with PIWIS, and then load the maps from DVD to the hard disk.

I thought that but Silverstone said it was up to date. MY2019 maps for PCM3.x systems were released a couple of weeks ago.
Any other way of getting it done other than OPC as they are useless? took them 5 weeks to get the online services added.

I was told the other day that the latest maps etc wouldn't be available until next year (Spring/Summer) - called to look into getting my 997.2 PCM updated to 7 digit postcode and latest maps (think the 997.2 is PCM3?) and they noted I might want to wait.MY2019 maps for PCM3.x systems were released a couple of weeks ago.
I ordered a set today. Should get them tomorrow. I'll email you some details when I get to my PC in the morning.

Yep that's the part number I gave them! is it a set of CD/DVD's or code for PIWIS?Here it is on the Porsche web site: http://content3.eu.porsche.com/prod/pag/tequipment...

That part number is for the licence (activation) code, which is based on the VIN. The map disks themselves are on 4 DVDs, with a separate part number. The process involves 3 stages.1) Update the system with update DVDs
2) Enter the licence code into the PCM using a PIWIS tester
3) Load the maps from DVD to the PCM hard disk drive.
It takes at least 2.5 hours for PCM3.1, and a bit longer for PCM3.0 as the DVD drive is a bit slower to read the disks.
