Just had a tussle with a Gallardo

As above in my 3.4 996. To my total and utter shock there was very little in it. He pulled about a cars length from 0-120mph. We had a brief chat, at which time he said "thats fooking fast!".
Can this be right? I was expecting to have my arse handed to me on a plate.
There was even less between my friends 360 spider and my 996 last saturday.
I was out handling the 360 (I've got soprts pack).
Whilst this maybe down to driver skill (which I don't have a lot of), It just didn't seem right.
Mostly I'm chuffed to bits with my 996, but in a small way I'm a little dissapionted. I aspire to ownership of such exotica and thought it only right to be put firmly in my place by the 'superiour vehicle'.
Have I got a good one, or is something wrong with thier Italian exotica?

He was very surprised, very pleasant about it too. This may well have changed as he went up the road.
The only thing that has really pulled away from me was a 450bhp Supra, that pulled 3 or more cars length from 20-130. The Supra refused to go round corners though, utterly pathetic handling.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but the Supra seemed faster than either the Lambo or the Rarri.

Hate to say, if the Gallardo is driven well its hugely quick, anything short of a GT3 RS would struggle. However it is one of those cars that is very easy to drive at 7/10 but difficult to drive at 10/10. Classic 4 wheel drive issue, you know its got huge grip however you don't have the level of confidence to take it to the limit.
The 996 however is a great car to take to 9/10...

... As confirmed by the lap times that Evo have for the Gallardo vs GT3 RS - not much in it.
Interesting that a 3.4 996 kept pace though - must be those Stuttgart ponies again, though I suspect you are being modest about your driving abilities.
I discovered a GT3 can keep pace with a 360 Challenge Stradale from 100kph to 230kph, with suggests German and Italian manufacturers have a different take on quoting performance figures.
I have always believed that Porsche make better cars than the Italians
I used to assume the Italians were quicker in a straight line, and Porsche caught up in the bends. Now I just think Porsche does everything better.
Still tempted by a tubi'd 355 spider for the looks, noise and sense of occasion though...

My friend who owns the 360 was not at all surprised, he's owned 3 Porsche in the past and says there is little in it. His friend has a 996 TT which he says is faster than the 360, not by a massive margin, but faster non the less. His other friend has a Lambo Murc???spelling??. He says the Lambo thrashes him to the point where it's not really a race!
I'll have to conclude that the Gallardo driver wasn't/couldn't extract the full power of the car, as the more I think of it, the less sense it makes.
It seems to me though, that the C2 punches above it's 300bhp weight.

My somewhat weighty 993 C4S with a quoted 285bhp comprehensively trashed a friend's 380bhp Supra around Imola a couple of years back.

poor meThe Supra that I had a play with was so poor round the corners it was unreal. When on a straight though it was very fast. I guess it would have had a similar power to weight has a TT X50 but with no transmission losses with it being RWD.
I can't imagine any Supra going round a track with respectable times, regardless of power.

Was on the autobahn yesterday and had a 'tussle' with an RS6. Managed to pull away from him between 120-160mph but not as fast as I'd expect. Mine's a standard 993tt, maybe his was chipped? Maybe they're just bloddy fast cars in a straight line. I know they have more BHP (450?) but they are also very heavy in comparison.
Most NA Porsche engines have torque curves easy to exploit whereas the Gallardo develops a "mere" ~376 lbs/ft in what's a quite a heavy car - that's not a lot of torque for a 5.0 engine, IMO. Same with the Ferrari V8 : lots of bhp but very high in the rev range and rather meager torque figures with regards to engine displacement.
Could it be possible the driver of the Gallardo did not rev his engine high enough to get all its torque properly on the road ?
Porsche dynamics remain better, anyway ...

i am most surprised by that. i once had a tussle with a 996 carrera 3.6 i think when i had my griff 5.0.
it was on a 3 lane dual carriage way with cameras every so often. lets just say, the porsche dirver's girlfriend was not amused, when he tired to floor it at 50 and i just kept pace with him for a bit, then waved goodbye and floored it. he tried this several times at each camera and lets just say that the 996 was no match for the griff.

On the straights you probably did pull away, I doubt very much you'd be boasting so much through the bends
