Hey folks

Some of you may remember I posted earlier in the year about potentially buying a 140i for a 25k commute , well after doing the math I decided this was dumb and that I should buy another BMW, and preferably a diesel.

This brings me to today where I'm the proud owner of a BMW 330D LCI Msport auto touring . The car only has 24k on the clock and a full BMW service history, and a credit to the previous owner, the car is beyond mint. I'm very happy with it.

However, I am the ripe old age of 30 with 12 years no claims. Insurance for me has always been cheap, I live in a low crime area and have always had performance based cars (if insurance takes this into effect?). The cheapest insurance quote I have received is £521, this seems very expensive to me. Seeing as I can insure a lot of much higher performance cars for much less.

Do BMWs just attract higher insurance premiums? Is there a preferred insurance company that you guys use?

Thanks all

PB

That's fantastic value especially when you factor in the mileage you will be doing .

BMW have a well documented theft issue with many of their cars, keys not necessary, so this could have a effect on premiums. Not sure if your particular car falls into this category.

I found insuring my standard m135i a nightmare , compared to a Scirocco with 400hp , loads of stickers on it and a massive rear wing.

In the end I paid something like £840 (27, 8year NCB)

Apparently after a year it will drop significantly.

That is crazy expensive. I'm trying to get my insurance down to into the £400's, but so far I haven't had much luck frown

I had exactly the same problem insuring an X3. No change in anything except car and my insurance doubled from a VW Tiguan which was remapped. I had similar comments about it reducing significantly after a year. Apparently lots of people bin RWD BMW's early in their ownership.

Expensive to repair with significant part costs, theft target (entire car and parts) and people binning them.

I have just got used to them being pricey to insure, end of. Don't forget certain insurers won't touch any BMW's.

My insurance doubled when I went from a Passat to a 330d.

If it makes you feel any better, my friend pays £84 a month to insure his 2014 320d, he does big mileage and business use is included but still! eek

That is exactly what mine has done. I've come from a modified Subaru Impreza and also a Land Rover Defender (still own). Both of these cars insured together were cheaper than just insuring my 330D.

My gosh... I would be tempted to swap his BMW for any other generic 2.0L Diesel which would have cheaper insurance

I'm a first time BMW owner and have definitely found it more expensive to insure than any previous car. And I've had a fair few cars.

To be fair it's a 440i GC, so it's never going to be dirt cheap, but its £200 / yr more to insure than the Alfa Giulia Veloce I have previously (for a whole two months). Still only £590/yr at 35 with 11 yrs NCB so it's not too bad. It'll go up shortly when I have my MPPSK installed!

It was actually cheaper to insure than an AMG C43 or S5 which were the alternatives when I shopped around.

Some eye watering quotes there.

I'm paying £540 fully comp for my 130i, Boxster-S and 306 GTI-6, including cover for one trackday (upgradable mid-term to 3 trackdays for an extra £90).

I remember being surprised how cheap the cover was for our M135i when it was new. Around £300 i seem to remember.

Most of the quotes in here look "reasonable" in my view....at 29, 3 claims, 0 points, reasonable area is always £1500 minimum.

I think part of that is the body having no steel and still scares insurers.

Yes that is what I was told.

For me specifically having no insurable experience in RWD meant that many of the specialist brokers I usually use could not offer, aside from Adrian Flux, who wanted £1500.

In the end i went with the cheapest from a comparison site and I will insure with a specialist

I bought my dad a 330d earlier this year (going to export it to Cyprus). At the time I didn’t have the SL, so it was going to be a 3rd (now 4th) car until it gets containerised. All the brokers were telling me it was difficult to insure temporarily, as it’s a ‘high performance car’. I just asked them to look at the ‘other cars’ part of the quote. (M6 & 760). Axa (who insure them both) eventually came back with the best quote at £390/yr but that’s still substantially more than I pay for the 760.

At the end of the day, all the things already mentioned up-thread are true, BMW’s get nicked, they’re not cheap to repair, to the man in the street a 330d is a fast car, & new owners are often tempted to try their drift skillz, so good chance of binning it. There’s also plenty of them about, & cars that aren’t common tend to have lower risk profiles in my experience (not enough aggregated data?) - so the 330 ticks a lot of the actuarial risk boxes, I suppose.

Who’s that with?

I’m looking at finding a policy where you can add trackdays for not an extortionate amount extra?

Footman James

The crucial thing is to have one vehicle that's a bit of a classic. In my case i'm told it all hinges on the Boxster.

They also handle my motorbikes, which i've just added all onto the same policy, so all of my cars/bikes are on one policy with one renewal date. I nearly fell off the phone when they said how much it would cost for the year - roughly the same as the cost of filling each of them with fuel.

The exception is the K1300 which i've just got. They couldn't offer a competitive quote on it because it's not classic enough

Nice. I keep getting the itch for another Caterham but i've blown so much on racing them i've gone cold turkey. The Boxster is so useful in comparison to a caterham and i couldn't justify having two toys...i don't think...maybe....

...goes off to check classifieds....damn it!!

That doesn’t sound bad my 2014 M235i that I do 20k miles a year (owned since new) in costs me £724 to insure with elephant.

I am 28 with 11 years no claims bonus
