This months Evo magazine has a great feature on driving the 6.0 VXR flat out in the Aus. Northern Territory (no speed limits). They rate the car 4.5 stars.
An article on how McLaren F1 designer Gordon Murray loves Smart cars will interest those who like myself enjoy driving these little cars at 10/10ths(Will!!!)
Saleen has a twin turbo version of its S7 putting out 750bhp & 700lb ft. It's a 7.0 litre V8, but I think it might be LS1 based. If so, should squeeze into our cars!
The new all-aluminum V8 engine casting was engineered and tooled by Saleen
If the design is even loosly based on any manufacturer then it would be on a f**d lump as thats always been Steve Saleens bread and butter. It would the equivelence to "treason" if he switched to chevy power now.

There is a 1000 bhp version in the pipeline. Is that not a touch too much from 'just' 7 litres of pushrod V8, as a street car?

Deccy, I can normally pick them up within a few weeks.
The airports sometimes have them, I know the Melbourne one does occasionally. There must be a good newsagency up there! When you are in Melbourne, the Technical Bookshop up the top of Swanston stocks a lot of them.

More fun driving them at 11/10ths, maxed out at 130 once, repeat run only 120 mph. Followed ukhsv once in his HSV, sure he pulled away each time but then I always re-appeared in his rear view mirror. Done a few track days too, couple of times on two wheels!

Take all the C & E class gizmos off and it can be hairy but FUN

Once you have learnt the characteristics of the Smart in particular the gearbox, driving them is hilarious, not at all scary but then I've ridden bikes since I was 16. Not sure that I fancy doing 130 mph in one though!
Mine is standard bar wider wheels & K&N filter, so only goes 84 mph. Remarkable quick off the line though.
But speed isn't the point(the HSV satisfies that urge), it's hustling it around corners and nipping in & out of traffic that's the fun. Setting it up right for corners takes some skill & is very rewarding.
Of course for City driving/parking they are unbeatable.

Steady as a rock at speed, can even take your hands off the wheel at 100+, 6-pot calipers help as you can out brake others. Did Amsterdam to Calais with a passenger in 3 hours last year, I comented at the time that the HSV would not have done it as quick, so quite right, out & out speed is not always the answer.

Wow! I can outbrake most cars with the standard brakes, you must nearly somersault with 6 pots,LOL. Look forward to chatting "Smart" when we eventually meet.

Will- I could probably do with a new set of plugs on the HSV, which could just be the excuse I need to visit LSV & have a go on the RR, although I'm happy with the performance it would be interesting to see if the figures have improved or not since the car was last fiqured.
Maybe we can meet at LSV once the RR is up & running ?
I thought LSV were getting new tuning software, LS1 Edit is old or is there a new version?
