AC, whine? Regas?
Discussion
Hi guys.
My F30 330d has started making a whine ONLY when the AC is on, the whine is intermittent, it’s not loud, but notice it with the radio off, the whine started just over idle to 1800rpm when the engine is underload, and the whine speeds up with the engine RPM.
Some have said the aircon needs a regas and oil, as the pump goes low on the oil, and begins to get an intermittent whine?
Can anybody shed light on this?

Bo11ocks does it.
The gas contains a lubricant entrained in it.
Obviously this lubricant...... Lubricates.
If the amount of refrigerant (and therefore lubricant) is low (as in leaks away) a pressure sensor will prevent the clutch in the compressor engaging and so the compressor doesn't turn under these circumstances, I personally have never heard of one going wrong as they are considered "fail-safe" and would fail to the non-operating condition.
It sounds more like you have a bearing on its way out in the compressor.

Oh! I have had the clutch on the compressor go before on a Ibiza, but made no warning signs. The gas contains a lubricant entrained in it.

My aircon is cold, with a bearing on its way out, wouldn’t it whine all of the time?

Because it's not under load unless and until the compressor is working, it's just running light the rest of the time.I had one do very similar, a good few years back. It was the tensioner bearing.

I never said the clutch has gone, I said the compressor has a bearing on its way out, so not the same.
Only when the air con is on as it is only then that it is turning.
I know, I was just putting some info in there, as I thought there would be some other noise?Only when the air con is on as it is only then that it is turning.
Yesterday I had the AC on, for 50miles, I only heard the whine a couple of times, does that mean the compressor isn’t always working?
