advice anyone??
Discussion
Originally from Plymouth UK, I am currently living in New Zealand and am due to visit Australia before returing home. Having visited both countries a couple of years ago, I am looking this time to return home with A UTE SS or MALOO.
I came across the website the other day and since thought of a few questions that hopefully some of you will be able to answere.
1. Can anyone advise on the cheapest method of shipping from Aus? Are certain ports cheaper than others (perth, because its closer???) and any company names would be a great help.
2. Do I require the vehicle to be fumigated? Does this get done at the port, or is it cheaper to have done before?
3. Having lived in the UK for 29 years, I am fully aware of those insurance idiots, and how rich they think we all are. I have contacted a few old favourites from the past but am finding it difficult getting info across the water.
Does anyone have any policy's they feel are worth mentioning? Could I perhaps insure it under 'commercial' regardless of its engine/wheels etc...?? Any names would be great.
4.How do you guys get on with spare parts, and do you order them from Vauxhall or contact Holden direct?
Do you find either of the two companies very supportive??
5. Have fun - Hope to be joining you soon!
Cheers.

Hi Archer
An inspired choice to go for a Maloo or an SS. I would go for the Maloo because it is a HSV and has all the bits you would wont on it.
I have not imported a UTE but there are a few guys on her that have who will hopefully answer your questions.
As far a parts go there are a number of companies that are more than happy to ship parts from Australia. Vauxhall only sell the Monaro over here so the range on parts that will cross over to your UTE may be limited.
As for insurance I am currently with Adrian Flux who are very reasonably and recognise the HSV security system I have on my Clubsport R8.
Good luck and keep us informed.

"roger440" "kiwihsv" are a couple people who has done the whole process for them self's, so they can give you some more detail, but here is a quick list of things to look into.
1. if you own the Ute in OZ/NZ for 6 months and have a utility bills with your address on it you will be able to bring the car into the county without paying tax.
2. if you bring the Ute in as your private car you cannot sell it for 1 yr (if you do you must pay the taxes!!)
3. If the car is a personal import you will need to go throught SVA test which mean at the very least you will need a speedo showing MPH (easy if it is newer then VY)Rear foglamp, and a few other items.....
4. If the car is not a personal import things start to get a bit harder as the car should go through ESVA which could involve a crash test!!!!!!!!!!!
5. "Stu" is in the process of importing a Maloo and it is proving a little entertaning....I am sure he will add his comments.
6. If you do bring the Ute over it might be worth a call to Midshire Motors as they will for a sum of money get your Ute through ESVA with a very novel idea!!!
My advice is look into owning the Ute for more than 6 month before you ship it as this is the least painfull route

mmm.....My electricity bill needs paying!!!
Might have to agree on the Maloo front, although the SS is very tunable and there are an awful lot more quicker SS utes in OZ than Maloo's!!
The new VZ Maloo comes with the 6 litre LS2 though so that might tempt you more! certainly tempting me!!!

Hey there, island boy hsv,
Thanks for the advice. Adrian Flux was one of the companies I tried. - I have had policy's through them years ago. They have replied to me via email saying due to overwhelming phone calls (no surprise there), they are unable to quote me online - is there any point offering the service??
Instead they expect me to spend the weekend waiting in their phone queue. - I'll give them another prod.
Thanks to uk hsv and motomk for the 6 months ownership advice. Would be great although I'm not sure I'll be spending that much time there. Thanks also for the mod list - are you sure about the speedo? (a friend of mine has a rallye golf which still shows K's, although it was imported many moons ago it still goes through the MOT's)
Cheers
