Help me decide! 5 series vs XF
Discussion
Good evening chaps!
I'm looking to buy a new car around Aug/Sept time, and I've narrowed it down to two:
Jaguar XF 3.0d premium luxury/portfolio trim
BMW 530d m-sport (with pro nav and HK audio)
I'm looking around 14 plate with <50k on the clock. From what I've seen, BMW are looking around £1-2k more expensive spec for spec.
What would you guys suggest? I honestly cannot decide between the two, I'll test drive them nearer to time, until then...
Thanks and regards,

having owned a XF which was genuinely terrible both in quality (an orchestra of squeaks and creaks, trim that breaks when you touch it) and reliability, i cannot encourage you enough to go with your head. I had electrical problems which Jag were unable to fix and then when the warranty ran out they refused to continue funding the repairs, despite never having actually fixed the issue. Will never go there again.
I've just gone from a 2014 5 series (M-Sport trim) to 2010 XFR - despite what a poster above said, the Jag is clearly a cut above on the interior quality stakes, leather is by far superior for example. Appreciate this is absolutely top spec and perhaps the premium luxury models aren't the same, but I much prefer the Jag.
Remember the XF from 2015 is a completely different car. Lighweight aluminium chassis knocked a couple of 100kg of previous model. It far superior drive to the 5 series.
The 5 has better interior finish.
After driving both the 4pot petrol and diesel models jag has better diesels bmw better petrol engines.
I would take the post 2015 XF

Had to make the same decision.
Early XF's did have electrical gremlins but these will have been well gone by 2014 MY's.
2.2/3.0D are joint Ford/PSA units.
They use the same ZF8 gearbox as BMW.
XF was a nicer place to spend time. Premium Luxury and up get higher quality leather.
Meridian 380W stereo standard on P.Luxury.
BMW in car menu much neater than the Jag. 5 series drove a little better too imo.
I went XF as it was a bit different and easier to get a higher spec.
Jag dealers have fixed price servicing for cars over 3 yrs old - £299 A service/£399 B service.

I have the current model and the quality has been too bad and sufficiently diverse across the vehicle to confirm to me that JLR don't take quality seriously enough. If I had repeat issues with just the engine for example I could be persuaded that mine had a dodgy lump, unfortunately not in my case. I had the older model as a courtesy car (one of many) and I found the interior on that model to be much nicer, though certainly less contemporary. A 2014 older shape will likely have had a lot of issues ironed out by that point so is arguably a better proposition than the new one.
I'd say if the BMW is 1k more then look for a Premium Luxury/Portfolio S the extra grunt is nice & if you've got the extra in your budget then that's where i'd be looking.
The Jag rides & imo has the better quality interior, the BMW has the better infotainment but rides poorly even without the runflats, reliability wise they're both strong drivetrains.
Test drive both as one will suit you more than the other:

ks on the internet or BMW bias on here. Buy the Jag but make it a supercharged V8.
