DPF problems bmw e87
Discussion
I posted here about my bmw 1 series e87 2010 a while ago .. car started running rough earlier in year ... had a forced 're gen and engine clean ... fine for 3000 miles and then did it again... so off for a full dpf clean this time plus welding to exhaust ... told all would be well ... spent nearly £900 at this stage ... so dpf clean done 5 weeks ago and it's doing it again ... so utterly peed off with the car ... garage said will need another dpf clean and diagnostics to see what's causing the blockage .... surely that should have been highlighted before ? I am really cross with garage because I asked them to give it a full look over and make sure all was well ... Any thoughts please ? Garage mentioned a sensor ( not sure which one) and egr valve .... It's getting like a money pit
....ps car is high miles but painstakingly serviced and looked after .

Could be thermostat - one of the parameters for regen is coolant temperature so dodgy thermostats have been known to cause regen issues.
If your current garage aren't explaining things to your satisfaction you probably need to try somewhere else.
If it's high mileage the DPF might just be end of life and need replacing.

It is high miles ... 171000 ... but they said that dpf was in full working order after clean ... mentioned something about running diagnostics .. Pressure sensor ? I asked why that wasn't picked up on diagnostics before ... they said no problem before .... Unfortunately I have changed garages once already as previous garage I used said just take the DPF off !!! Terrific ... would have been illegal !! Not having much luck with garages ... these were both recommended
There is a DPF delta pressure sensor (it measures pressure drop over the DPF to estimate how much soot is in there)
If that's broken you'd get regular regen and fault codes. That's probably what they're talking about. Should be cheap to try.
EGR problems could mean you accumulate soot quicker and do more regen

I can't bear the thought of having a Japanese car
but yes definitely petrol this time... I shall miss the fuel economy but not the time in the garage !!
I'm sure you will have found that the ultimate driving machines can also be ultimate wallet drainers so you make decisions on what's best for you at the end of the day.
but yes definitely petrol this time... I shall miss the fuel economy but not the time in the garage !! DPF shouldn't be at fault, they are rated for 300k easily (don't believe what people say, with them being unreliable on BMW diesels, best they are for that marque) - have you checked your EGR valve? I suspect you have....
My 118d 2008 suffered with this around 150k same issues you mentioned - it was so coked up, my garage had to build a tool/lever to get it off!!
Took it up to 170k no issues after fitted new one.
Makes me chuckle when people say how unreliable BMW's are, I have done over 350,000 miles in these over the past 8 years, now got a '12 E91 N47 320d with 95k on (despite the internet saying they were crap, and the chains will snap, and the clutch will fall off etc etc)

It's always been brilliant . I had a 318i toured a few years ago - when I sold it , it had done 248000 and was still going strong. My 118d 2008 suffered with this around 150k same issues you mentioned - it was so coked up, my garage had to build a tool/lever to get it off!!

It's just the last few months ... Was gets me is I took it to the garage and basically said - check everything and fix everything so that it was done ... so I am frustrated that 4 weeks later it has problems .... Would I have another one ? Yes - if I could afford another one ... but sadly I can't right now

Something that few people realise (that last point). DPFs are generally over-sized for the engine exhaust flow (or were) and this is because, as well as soot, they also fill up with ash. Soot can be burned off, but the remaining ash deposits cannot because these are already oxidised. The ash does actually help with filtration, but eventually there will be too much ash in the filter and the backpressure will be too high (cars tend to have a sensor pre, and some pre and post DPF to monitor along with a DPF loading model in the ECU). ETA. I see 171,000 miles. My bet is on needing a new DPF. Most stuff on cars is designed for 10 years, maybe 15 years. So I suspect the DPF is end of life really. Have a look on eBay, you might get a one from a breakers yard thats done fewer miles.
DPF pressure sensor can't hurt either, these should be cheap to buy and depending on where its located, easy to change. For instance on the Ford Focus its screwed to the side of the battery box.
