I am thinking about buying a car which has just run out of road Tax & MOT.

What are the laws around driving that car from where it was bought either back to my house, or to my local garage to get the MOT (so I can then get Tax).

I know you can drive a car with no MOT to a garage to get an MOT done as long as it's booked in & thats completely legal - does the same law apply ?

Thanks

The exemption from MOT and Excise Licence are very much the same and permit movement of a vehicle without if submitting for a pre - arranged test and for bringing it away from such a test. Whilst a short stop on route may be in order providing that the driver is on his way to the test [Sec State for Transport v Richards (1997)] it doesn't permit a trip up to Jockland and a weekend holiday.

The car is in Watford & I'm in Kent. Probably safer to hire a trailer for the day then - it's only £35 for the day, and rules out the possibility of problems !

Thanks.

The car weighs about 1300kgs & will be being towed by either a 7 series BMW or a LWB Transit, both of which are within limits for towing that sort of weight (trailer weighs less than 400kgs).....

Transit is wider & has a higher driving position than the car it's towing, so thats ok.....

7 series is as wide as a bus, so that should be ok too !

(so there !)
