Haggling with the salesman

A bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question - this has been discussed at some length on the 'Ask a car salesman anything' thread, so might be worth a read there.
A few thoughts: some deals will have wiggle room, others will not, depends what they paid for the car and how much rectification work was required to put it on the forecourt. Often there are better incentives available for finance customers than those paying cash. Credit cards cost dealers a lot so many will only accept the deposit on credit card, not the main payment. If the car has been for sale a while and it's close to the end of a month (or quarter) you might get a better deal.

Keep it civil, be upfront and have a laugh with the sales guy.
If he likes you and can have a bit of banter, then possibly.
Just remember, the sales guy will probably be earning his commission based on a certain percentage of the profit retained in the vehicle, ie. 10% of the net profit left in the vehicle, so don't be surprised if he does not want to give all of that away.
After all, do you go to work for nothing?

God I hate this part of car buying. The forced banter and being all pally with a person who ultimately is trying to stuff you. They can say they have your interests at heart but if they are on commission they usually do not.Keep it civil, be upfront and have a laugh with the sales guy.

Do all the haggling over email if you can.

Well it's a weird story and it went all "Larry David". I was getting on okay with him and bought the car but the finance guy mispriced it by a grand but I had signed the papers so told them tough I'm having the car. He rang me to say he almost lost his job over it and will get no commission and I said don't worry I'll sort him out.I have him 50 quid in a brown envelope to say thanks. He rang me up a few days later to say thanks and asked if I wanted to go to his wedding. I said "yeah yeah sure". He sent me the invite and I didn't RSVP cos I thought it would be full of people who would want to kill me over forcing them to honour a misprice.
A few months later I went to the dealers for some warranty work (yes this was a huge German car chain) and the guy totally ignored me.
I was quite hurt by this.
