As I may be in the market for a cheap parts hauler later in the summer, I’ve been having thoughts about how I can make it a bit more interesting....

Inspired by the RR thread on the jacked up off road MR2 I was thinking about doing similar to a mediocre family hatchback. AT tyres, roof rack, suspension lift etc., but I would ideally want an LSD or something which gives a similar result.

So the question is, what’s in shed money territory these days with a limited slip diff?

Odd old cars with lsd for around a grand or so... ummm

Honda Civic VTI-s MB6s .
Honda Prelude 2.2 SIR
Rover 200/600/800 vitesse turbo models
Toyota MRS
Mazda MX5 - certain JDM and limited edition models have a Torsion lsd (better) others have viscous style (not so good but better than OPEN)
E36 BMWs from 318IS to 325i a LSD was a factory option, usually pre 97 cars.
Lexus IS200 Sport

Streetwise - this guy did it

Streetwise prices are creeping up, so well worth cashing in now while they're still cheap (around £400-600 should get you a half decent one)

That's the cheap one I was thinking of aka-kerrly

You might be about 5-10 years too late for a lot of the really cheap, rwd LSD cars though OP frown

IS200 Sports are getting snapped up the same way Sierras were in 2010: they're all coming to Ireland to go round in circles. They do it quite well too: I've been in one while, let's say, 'road marking was in progress'. If you're looking a parts hauler I'd suggest the Sportcross (estate). To my knowledge they all had LSDs, whereas only the Sport trim level in the saloon car did. It doesn't take much effort to weld the diff but still.

There are two in my family sadly both are SE spec with no LSD, my brother bought the one on the LEFT first for £750 and then I bought the one on the RIGHT for £650 - i swapped the 18 inch wheels, the TRD grill, the bonnet and a few other bits onto my brother's car an then gave it to my dad as a stop gap car.

That was 2 years ago, both cars have been obscenely reliable. the Y plate is on 125k - only ever had consumables/service items, the X reg, on 165k needed a little bit of welding to its sill last year - about a postcard size. Otherwise it has also been completely reliable other than one wheel stud snapping.

They drive really well, all round independent suspension, good weight distribution an wheelbase make it in my opinion a better chassis than E36/E46 BMW 3 series and i prefer the drive - i just a massive shame that we don't see hardly any IS300 in manual in the UK as i expect a 2JZ IS is FANTASTIC!

Well worth reading up on, a Sport with LSD is a good start, there are supercharger and turbo kits for the standard engine or 1/2JZ Supra/soarer/Chaser conversions if you crave more GO GO.

Yes, I do like them - they're a nice size and have a sunroof as a plus in my books! I was lucky enough to drive one at a CCIA day at Millbrook back when they were new. Definitely on the radar with the Torsen diff

I'm pretty sure the higher-powered Mazda RX8 had an LSD as standard too.

They're pretty cheap now, but a bit thirsty for daily use!

I'd say an IS200 Sport, my mate does V8 conversions on these LS & UZ which makes them a great sleeper, he actually rates the LS conversion as the better one but both are good, the UZ counters by being the cheaper conversion, another reason the IS is a good start is the rear end is basically a Supra so adding power isn't an issue.

Bit bigger than a hatch, but what about a DIY all-road Audi A4 Quattro ?
