Morning all,

My front number plate fell off yesterday. (Parked in the sun and it melted it seems). I’ve not got 2 strips of 3M double sided tape on the bumper that I simply can’t shift.

Any solvents that are paint friendly or tricks I can use?

TIA

I tried that but it had little to no effect.

Will a hair dryer help?

You first need to remove the adhesive top to the tape as this will stop chemicals working through it

Get a hairdryer and warm the strips and use your thumb the rub/roll as much of it away as possible. You will be left with foam residue held on by the glue. You can then use WD40 or petrol to get the rest off

Can't you just add more tape in different locations, and stick the numberplate back on, hiding it? No need to faff about.

^As above

Get a hairdryer on it. Warm it up a bit and get your fingernail in there. It'll all be off in a jiffy.

Sooooooo, I now know why ‘petrol’ wasn’t working . . . Any guesses?

Autoglym tar remover will safely deal with that. It can still take a while though, those sticky pads are a pain to remove.

Brake & clutch cleaner.
Used it for years to remove sticky residue of the type you speak of & the mess that's left after removing large decals from vans & caravans. Originally shown it by the workshop staff at a caravan repair place.
Never had an issue with it affecting the original paint - used it today to remove the sticky foam left after removing a side marker from the caravan I'm doing some paintwork on for my regular caravan sales customer.
Bit of heat - hot air gun in my case - & a plastic filler spreader to carefully remove the foam followed by the b&c cleaner on paper towelling (Aldi's Saxon is very good) to remove what's left.
