I've always wanted an excuse to buy and fix up a cheap MX5 but I'm not sure 2000 miles in one would be so great.

Probably not, and I'm sure they wouldn't check if you spent £1k fixing it up. But then you'd definitely want to drive it back. In which case it's a 'what car' for £1k purchase, £1k of mods/fixes and 4000 miles
