I've always wanted an excuse to buy and fix up a cheap MX5 but I'm not sure 2000 miles in one would be so great.

Probably not, and I'm sure they wouldn't check if you spent £1k fixing it up. But then you'd definitely want to drive it back. In which case it's a 'what car' for £1k purchase, £1k of mods/fixes and 4000 miles

Not sure about the car, but that's one hell of a drive. Some beautiful places along the way.
Slovenia is especially beautiful imo. I did a drive similar a few weeks back.

circa 9 years ago I did a Barmy to Barcelona banger rally with a £250 budget in a 1995 C180 - car was great and was good fun drifting round the mountains and crashing into them / friends cars, so that gets my vote!
