Sub £5k motorway car

Currently running a 1.9 TDi Audi A4 from 2004. Ticks all my boxes but isn’t comfortable cruising at just above average motorway speed due to only 5 gears. Looking for something more comfortable and refined at higher motorway speeds. My new circumstances will have me doing a lot of miles on the motorway, most of it late at night’. Any recommendations for a car under £5k that would be good at this, ideally folding seats, refined cabin, decent speakers, and over 35mpg (lpg considered also)? Some surprising options out there such as Volvo, Saab, Audi, Lexus. (Even second hand phaetons which would be a novelty with a lpg conversion). Thanks!

What RPM does the 5 speed do at 70mph?

Hard to look past a Volvo v70 for that. I’d normally say to get one pre-dpf, but if you’re going to be doing lots of miles, that shouldn’t be a problem & the facelifts are nicer inside to my view. £5k should get you into the newer shape version as well, but I don’t rate those as highly, personally. They feel more flimsy, is how I’d describe it.

Low mileage old shape Toyota Avensis. 6th gear is a real cruiser, T180 if possible, 173 bhp 45mpg. Comfy and safe.

Volvo v70 or s60 is about as comfy as you can get and more refined than the Vag alternatives suggested.

I've just done exactly this and bought an 02 Lexus LS430. If fuel economy isn't the prime consideration, it's hard to beat for motorway use. The rear seats don't fold down though if that's important. That aside, it's a terrific car; quick, comfortable and loaded with kit.
