111R power delivery...?
Discussion
Hi all... I've purchased a 111R and collect in a few weeks. I know the car is excellent in all areas but have read some concerns about the power delivery - is it really all or nothing in terms of the 6K light speed jump? I drove a Sport 135 and thought it was great through the revs up to 80mph - never really went above that speed as it was a B road blast. I guess the question is, what is the car like <6K - I wonder if it would feel slow compared to a VXR? What happens at 6K?!

It is about 6.2 - 6.8k things go ballistic! I have stopped looking at the rev counter 'cos I can hear when it is about to get on cam. I now just hold tight!
The car pulls really hard untill you get into the power band then there is a kick in the back like a big turbo.
I would have to agree, its not exactly slow below 6.2, but it gets that much better above. You dont have to use the second cam unless you are on a charge, 0-6000 rpm will be enough for most occasions, but there are times when only 8000+ will do, like 1 one 1 with a cobra from the lights, brought a smile to MY face!!!!
Quite a strong and sudden increase in noise and power delivery at 6,200. Even my 7 year old son exclaimed "wow" when he felt it for the first time.
However, I took my car out on track for the first time on Monday; you have to work quite hard to keep the car in its sweet spot between 6,200 and 8,500.
I also feel that the sudden power boost could quite easily catch the unwary out in the wet.
Love it though!

Certainly did, but not on track. I do not have a real issue with this, rather it is a characteristic of the car and like a lot of these things there is both good and bad. In an ideal world power delivery should be as linear as possible, the Toyota solution is non-linear but still massive fun.

I meant shot2bits mate - seems an odd (and rather important) question to ask having ordered a £30k-ish car!

Didn't you test drive one before ordering?
No but I'd driven a Sport 135 a few years back and was amazed by the car in terms of how different it is to any other motor on the road. I'd read about the 111R and decided it was a bit more friendly than an Exige (other considered option) for every day use and went for it... I cannot think of an alternative purchase to the Lotus other than a VXR which doesn't have the same focus or looks as the Eilise in my opinion. I'd just read the comments from "PetrolTed's" review and thought I'd check out opinions on the power delivery.

Fair play to you! Buying a car on the basis of other peoples opinions in reviews.
Not saying the 111R isn't a great car but the power delivery isn't everyones cup of tea - might be worth blagging a 'test' somewhere though.

I'm guessing the delivery provides a split personality - easy relaxed driving below 6K and then all out blasting above... I remember driving the Integra Type R - soon got used to the high end power delivery so I guess it wont present an issue for me...

The 'tegi-R was surreal. It had an insane rush on vtec.
It was like NOTHINGS CAN PASS ME NOW!!!!!!!
The 111R weighs loads less and is more powerful, yet doesn't exactly feel like you've been booted in the @rse by the right foot of god.
I guess the gearing has a lot to answer for....
Strange as you're the first person to say that - every review / comment I've read state that the car goes into light speed at 6.2K RPM with a sudden woosh of power - damn, why isn't my car ready for collection yet!?

Buying a car for that much without a test drive... are you completely ?
No, deffo not! There is no other choice of car having driven the Sport years back - the Lotus is a dream come true... Plus, I have some personal stuff going on which means I don't really get much time - just went for it, felt right - what can I say?! The power delivery was just an interesting aspect and wanted to guage peoples opinions...
I don't really find the power delivery particularly non-linear. It never really feels lacking in torque when its just on the first cam. I think the impression of someone lighting the afterburner when you get to 6k plus probably comes from the fact that most of us are more used to a lot of normal cars running out of breath at that point, whereas the Toyota just comes on to the second cam and keeps going for another 2000+ revs at even greater intensity.
It is certainly not lacking in grunt at low revs or in any way laggy like a lot of turbo cars.
You won't regret it anyway - trust me!
