Having a poke around the classifieds to see what the prices are like on 6 Series and noticed that there are no petrol 6 Series Gran Coupés for sale. There are some two door ones but searching for a Gran Coupé and specifying petrol only returns M6s in the results. Was the 6 Series GC so very scarcely bought with a petrol engine that there are literally none on the used car market?

Here is the thinking for many...

640D v 640i - they are virtually the same power, but with a barge like the GC the extra torque of the diesel will help, the 40i N55 really needs revving out and does that really fit with a cruiser like the GC unlikely. But, the reality is the MPG, additional costs and mostly likely the mileage people do means that the 40D usually wins that contest when the times are virtually identical.

650i - the N63 was on the face of it the engine to go for the "between" step of the M6 and 40D. Problem is the 50i N63 in original form (rather like those with any other N63 engine 550i/750i) soon found that it was bag of st. Drivetrain issues are common specifically excessive oil consumption, coolant line failures and general not an engine to touch with a barge pole (for further information then look on the American forums as the N63 will feature heavily).

I know of one UK owner of an F10 550i with the N63, started a thread I asked if at that age it was an N63 engine. 8 weeks after that thread the car had spent 3-4 weeks in the local dealer still none the wiser as to the issues.

The N63tu is generally a better engine and from memory was fitted circa 2014 onwards. However it is not without it's own issues of coolant lines.

M6 - N63 serves as the base of the S63 featured in this, but generally had little to none of the issues the original N63 had.

But to really answer your question the 40i was not popular because it was no faster than the 40D. The 50i at least in the UK for many it was 50i v M6, and I suspect many would prefer an M6.

As a 40D owner it did become clear to me looking around that it was easier to step into a 40D v 40i. I do not regret my decision as in my time of ownership I know of only 3 40i owners, have only seen a handful for sale. 50i's I have seen 5, 4 for sale (seen one or two of these in person) and one being driven and way more M6's.

Really only the yanks bought the 50i's, but so many complaints about the original N63 has upset the boat over there a bit. So much so BMW NA bought back virtually all of them from the time the drivetrain issues occurred.

Interesting insight, thanks. My perspective is probably unlike that of most prospective buyers - I just love the exhaust note that the 40i produces!

Correct.

That may well change in a couple of years time because of the anti-diesel backlash - but it will be a few years before any of those 40i versions that might now be ordered during past 6-9 months to filter through to the used market.
Even then, I don't think it will be a significant increase in numbers though.

From what I have seen barely any have made it into the market the 640D still is the one that was ordered mostly on finance and little to none 40i's. I think the thing is the 6 series is odd because the 40i really makes no sense. If truth be told I don't think we have quite got to the full stage of full electric or part electric v diesel in large saloons.

Look at all those diesels pros at forum and you will figure why there are barely any 640i.
The same people who probably never drove a 640i prior commenting on it.
I have one for sale but it's left hand steering tho.

Indeed.

OP. Don't use PH classifieds, they're rubbish.

MitchT, there are a few 640i GC's on the BMW AUC site.

I recently bought a 640i GC (tried a 640d and had a f10 530d prior to that) and while the 40d is very accomplished, the 40i just feels nicer...

Both are equally as good for everyday driving, the 40d (c.40mpg easily) has a better range and 40i sounds nicer, a bit smoother but thirsty (27-30mpg)

As a private buyer not doing massive miles, 40i makes very good sense (sport mode, foot down it doesnt sound bad at all) where range / mpg matters, 40d.

Biggest thing to consider is the sheer size of the thing: tight parking and narrow lanes can become daunting!!

Still, I chose the 40i to cover 20k p.a. and havent looked back smile
