Driving today in sunny Plymouth along the Hoe. Mr PC having pulled over some young lad in his Ford Escort for doing I know not wrong see's me burbling towards him grandly steps out and holds up his right arm and orders me to stop which wasn't hard as I was posing at 20mph easing myself over the outrageously high speed bumps.Please pull over to the side sir whilst we deal with this motorist. Thinking they have bigger fish to fry they let the lad go."Now sir have you ANY idea why we have stopped you?" Not really I replied? "Well please get out of your vehicle and get in to the back of the patrol car sir." To cut a long story short and a 15 minute lecture I was convicted for an illegal number plate ie no spacing between the number 5 and the very next letter (G5RFF). I was also informed that IF I did not comply with the Statutory regulations that DVLA would confiscate my personal plate and force me to place a "Q" plate on my Griff which would according to the police officer "GREATLEY REDUCE THE VALUE" of my car if not make it impossible to sell. For all those with knowlege greater than mine (serving Bibs)is this TRUE or was I delibertly misinformed? I assume that it would be illegal to FORCE upon you a number plate which would cost thousands of pounds to be wiped off the value of you pride and joy (would you buy a "Q" plate TVR?) I have set the ball rolling to rectify the illegal number plates. Hang on, so you're driving along and come across a Police 'checkpoint'. You have an illegally spaced numberplate. Why are you being picked on? Unless there are 99 other times you've been stopped for minor infringements you're not mentioning.
Now if your issue is with the Police spending time telling you off for a dodgy plate then I see why you're complaining, but even then it sounds like you are just unlucky. They were probably told to hang around on the seafront and stop the cruisers or something by their sarge (or whoever dishes out the jobs for the day).

One thing to be aware of is that you yourself don't *own* the registration .. it still belongs to dvla, and they have the power to take it off you if you deliberately mis-space the letters or change the shape of them ..
I doubt you'd get a Q plate,much more likely another age related plate that can't be turned into anything else.

Yes you may be right I was in the wrong place at the wrong time with a dodgey number plate and we all know TVR's with the same defect.My main gripe is being deliberatly given the wrong/misleading information on FORCED "Q" inforcement by DVLA

I got stopped, and fined, for this last year. Paid the fine and put my "straight" plates on
....for a few weeks! Never been bothered since, and I've got hookey plates on both my cars.
It's illegal so can't really complain, just whether you're willing to run the risk I suppose.
I also heard that without photographic evidence there's nothing they can do, and that you get three (photographic) warnings before court action is taken. All rumour though, could anyone clarify?

I got stopped for similar in nuneaton a few years ago, the difference was that I had a small (bike size) front number plate on my mx5.
It was a sunny day, I had the roof down and I was stopped even though a mr2 and a scooby went past with much smaller front plates on whilst they had me stopped at the side of the road!
I will put this small plate on the front of my chim when dvla eventually swaps it from the mx5 to the chim, but I will keep a "standard size front plate" in the boot. Then if stopped, I will say that I had been at a track day, fitted the small plate to aid cooling, and will refit standard plate there and then!
Will this work?

Depends on the PO dealing using his/her discretion at the time, as this IS an offence...there are no excuses..!

A stupid waste of police time and tax payers money. In the States you can space letters and numerals as you think fit without having your fingers confiscated in a football stadium before the ensembled public. It's yet another one of those unquestioning dumb rules thought up by a petty-mined bureaucrat that needs wiped off the statute books! I mean, it makes the plate more memorable.

What about where somebody adds a wrong colour screwhead so that the numberplate is 'altered'?
How would you feel if somebody had driven into your car and then driven off and the registration number as seen by you did not exist (because of some alteration)?
You fiend!! I hope they lock you up and throw away the key for your heinous crime! Good job the plod have nothing better to do or you may not have been caught in time. You may have viciously flouted your misplaced letter for years without being stopped!

Stated that they allowed you one allowed official warning for breaking the rules by rearranging the spacing on your private plate. At the point of the second official warning they could make you have a standard plate, and would never be able to use a private plate on that car whilst it was still in your ownership.
But do not remember seeing any reference to them giving you a Q plate, thought this was just a normal plate based on the year the car was produced. My understanding is that Q plates have a specific meaning and this would not apply to your Griff.
