Currently looking at wiring up our kitchen diner for sound. I was originally going for Sonos but for various reasons (including aesthetics) I am now leaning towards speakers combined with a nice retro power amp. something with big, illuminated VU meters etc.

Any thoughts on what I should look at? I've seen some of the old technics stuff which looks good but I can't see anything else?

For the extra effort/spend over Sonos, you'd really have to hate the aesthetics. We have a few 1s dotted around the house, including in the kitchen, which we use for radio, podcasts and occasionally music.
While it's not the last word in sound quality, it's just so simple and slick, and it integrates/scales so well.

Some of the Yamaha amps combine modern functions (networking etc) with retro looks and good sound quality, might be an option.

Or if you aren't worried about the modern features then have a look at older amps from Yamaha (and whatever else you like the look of)
