Good Morning

I have been looking for B8 RS4 and a Cat D car came up, front end damage, repaired to an excellent standard. Been to see it and looks good. Well specc'd car. Under 40k miles and late 2014 and pretty immaculate condition.

I've owned cat C cars before albeit at the other end of the value scale so understand the pro's and con's. Also know the person selling so have some confidence it has been done properly.

My concern is resale. Anyone have any kind of idea how much a cat D should be valued at and how much would it go for vs a non cat D car?

Price is about £5k under similar non Cat D cars from what I can gather.

Thanks

Assuming it’s repaired well, I would expect the price to be 30-40% under what a non cat car would be, if not leave it alone.

WBAC will buy Cat Ds, so use that as a way of getting comparison figures between normal and cat D.

The real problem is that so few people will consider a Cat D car, so just finding *any* buyer is tough. Main dealers and most reputable traders won't touch them, and it's not like it's a common car in the first place.

I'd be particularly wary about airbags etc, and would want to see invoices for parts/work done at the very least.

Chances are he is going to struggle selling it too, so why not leave a low offer with him to ‘think about’. You never know your luck...

Regarding resale, if your going to keep it for a year or two to tick a box on your list I doubt it will be a smart investment. However, if you intend to drive it for the next 5+ years it could be a good buy, giving you the driving experience you want at a reduced investment.

All this aside, personally I wouldn’t.

Could you get a warranty on a Cat D RS4? That'll put your resales value question into the cheap weeds should something go wrong you need to fix. Sounds like too much trouble to me. If you want a fast B8 then find a good S4 and take it to MRC. it'll be cheaper to buy and run than a formerly broken RS4.

This. Either pay more for a leggy but not Cat D RS4 or buy a albeit newer and probably more optioned S4, as it will be the same price you are prepared to pay for a RS4. The tuned S4 is known to be as fast, if not faster than the RS4, and is a lighter car.

Thanks all. After doing some more research I've passed. Needs a good chunk more off it.

I fancy an RS for a year or two as will probably be abroad shortly with work.

Been looking at RS4s and RS5s but not too many in the colour and spec I'm after. I keep seeing modified s4s mentioned so will give that a look.

Why not pick up a mint B5?
