Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis
Discussion
Anyone have any knowledge or personal experience of this?
I ask because I believe this is the condition my gp was alluding to my daughter having.
She is 13yrs old and we went to the gp because she had noticed that one side of her rib cage protrudes quite a bit more than the other side. On examination he said the she also has one scapula higher than the other and a curvature of her t spine. She has had xrays taken and been referred to a specialist at Edinburgh sick kids.
We unfortunately have a family history of spine problems. I have a mild kyphosis and also osteoarthritis, my mum has osteoarthritis and my maternal cousin has a severe scoliosis and kyphosis.
I was wondering what treatment entails these days. My cousin had to wear a back brace for years which unfortunately didn't work. Do they still do this? My concern is my daughter also suffers from sensory processing disorder and autism so I am worried she would not tolerate a brace.
Any comments and advice greatly received.
Also any ideas on what her consultation may involve so I can prepare her (she struggles with change and anything out of routine).
