Any self employed gas engineers

Looking at setting up on my own. Got 8 years service and breakdown experience. Has anyone gone this route and been successful, how do you find it, and if you are prepared to discuss what sort of money can be made? Any advice? I am expecting contracting to provide a large portion of the income and have a good opportunity to do so.
