Hi All

Probably done to death....looking at purchasing a commuter car

Commute is around 40miles per day. Current Car Civic Diesel.

Requirements:

MPG - Mid to late 30's
Budget - £5-7k
Reliable
Quick
Fun
Preferably Petrol as miss the sound/noise capabilities

On the list so far - Golf Mk4 anni, Clio 182, Alfa GT, Audi TT (probably not - mpg), Civic Type R, BMW Alpina D3.

I know that list we probably have a few that miss something on my checklist but as long as the mpg isn't too long ie low 30s/20s id be happy.

Wow....definitely opened my eyes a bit more, I like the second Renault and surprisingly the first Alfa. There are many more I can look at then....thanks. Have you owned any of them?

If you decide a Focus ST is a little on the thirsty side then you could consider a Mk3 Zetec S with the 1.6L Ecoboost engine. 180bhp (with remap potential) and mpg's in the high 30s shouldn't be a problem:

Not owned the Alfa but I have supplied over 30 of them to customers in different trim levels (Sportiva spec is the most popular) & all are happy, what some aren't happy about is the service from the main dealers but a good Indy seems to have done the trick.

The Renaults I have two good friends that own/owned them (I chose the ST-3 Focus) & they're as reliable as anything else out there plus they have the added bonus of being the best drivers car my other friend who owned a 250 now has a last of the line 275 so I'd happily recommend either or anything else I listed but for me the Alfa combines pace spec & a decent drive with being a bit newer therefore not being as close to needing things like cambelts etc.

I'd probably go for the Focus again although not as sharp as the Megane it's the better all rounder with a bit of added character from the engine, it was the engine & slightly better handling that swayed me away from the other all rounder the which is the GTI (I have to say if I was looking at a GTI I'd be buying the Leon Cupra) so maybe test drive some of the cars you're considering.

From the list above it would be Focus Alfa Megane as it's main job is commuting the first two are better suited.
