Up until last week I regularly saw patriotic car users with national flags stuck to the windows, houses with large flags adorning the walls and people chanting 'iiiinnngggeerrrllllaanndd'.

I don't see anything like this now.

Where have all the patriotic people gone?

Dave.

I’ve been thinking the exact same thing. Not to mention all of the football experts; where have they all gone?
A couple of weeks back every bloody person I bumped into would “brighten” my day with little tips about some player’s strength, country’s history in football dictating their present performance, odds to win/lose or some such bks.
And worse is the use of “we” as in “we are playing Belgium tomorrow!”
Really Susan? Don’t you mean the team representing the country that you identify your nationality with is playing football against Belgium tomorrow? Because let’s be honest Susan, you’d be out of breath if you played a game on an Xbox, oh and by the way your arm fat just just knocked that glass of water over.
“We” are playing nothing.

And what do you know? Susan doesn’t give a rodent’s rectum any longer. She’s back into Love Island, shudder.

Englishmen and women do not wear their patriotism on their sleeve.

But make no mistake, they are patriotic and underestimate this at your peril.

I put my 1m X 1m French tricoleur up on the first floor balcony of our central London three storey town house, on June 21st, the day that we played and beat Peru 1-0.
I augmented the tricoleur on Bastille Day, July 14th, with a smaller tricoleur, which had flown from the aerial of my wife’s car, (when I’d driven it), but which I’d removed when parked, no sense in encouraging les damnés anglais.
I intended to take down the larger tricoleur after we beat Croatia last Sunday, but I decided to wait until the friendly, (I think), insults from friends, neighbours, and family, (in-laws), ceased.
Still waiting, drapeau français still fluttering, much to English wife’s chagrin, allez les Bleus!

Taxi driver: Did you watch the game yesterday?
Me: No. I'm not into football at all so I don't watch it.

Taxi driver then proceeds to give me a kick-by-kick account of a football match.

Me: [thinks] There goes your tip. [thinks]

I think it's possible to be patriotic without outwardly expressing it. Personally I consider myself a patriot. And I show it in the most important way. My wallet.

Where I can buy Scottish, I buy Scottish
Where I can't buy Scottish, I buy British
Where I can't by British, I buy 'western' (European or American)

By 'cant' I obviously mean where I would be more than reasonably inconvenienced to do so. It really is easy to support your country in this way, in many days it is merely a case of choosing choice brands.

But the subject is patriotism.

Nationalism is something else.

The line is paper thin. A lot of the stuff you see bandied about as patriotism these days is nationalism after a friendly rebrand

But at the end of the day it’s a positive sounding thing those in power invent to make sure those not in power do what they are told without too much fuss.

You don’t do x, y and z - you are branded ‘unpatriotic’ - and golly we don’t want that do we? Best do it - I once criticised a mans submarine and he called me a ‘pedo’ - once bitten twice shy and all that!

To be honest, a lot of ‘patriotism’ I see at the moment (especially somewhere like N,P&E is teamed with belittling anything non- British) - and a sort of verbal squaring up and ‘ya wot mate?!’ To anyone who questions it.

That’s nationalism

NB: I like British culture, I think it is varied and rich and interesting - and by and large (but not always) a nice thing to be involved in. Brilliant history too - but frankly so does everywhere, Britain isn’t wholly special like that. But I try not to lose sight of the fact that is happenstance I was born here.

I take Matt’s point, I was trying, and failing badly, to illustrate that I didn’t have the tricoleur fluttering from a flagpole in the front garden, but that it was flying from a balcony, halfway up the front of the house, sorry if I created the wrong impression.
Nick, I’m not wealthy by a long stretch, I was just lucky enough to to be earning a few quid, at the same time as having sold my house in the boonies for a good profit, just when the LDDC authorised the building and sale of the terrace of town houses, on the Thames where I live now.
The house is worth bundles, but I’m almost down to looking for the proverbial pot to p**s in.
I sp*nked most of my dough on holidays to South America and Australia, the rest I wasted on bread, soup, and coffee.
