Smart motorways!
Discussion
Apologies if this has been covered before.
Just wondered if your on a smart motorway and the last overhead gantry you went through displayed 50 for example and the next one further up displayed NSL, I’ve noticed people already at 70 before they’ve even got to the next one which puzzles me because it’s like if your driving on a 30 and the speed changes to 40 further up and there’s a mobile speed camera van parked up you’ll get done for speeding if your over 30 before the 40 but I’ve seen no flashes and many people seem to do it, sorry if this doesn’t make sense but I’m on the motorway everyday and I’ve always wanted to know.

While techincally you're correct, the limit is enforce after the sign - all the gantry cameras are rear facing, so speed checking after the gantry, therefore after the speed change. You couldn't give someone a ticket for doing 70mph when the limit is 70mph, even if they sped up before the sign/camera.

I thought about this but then I thought about the 30-40 scenario doesn’t make sense really Jordy12397 said:

I thought about this but then I thought about the 30-40 scenario doesn’t make sense really The camera is detecting speeds after the gantry therefore NSL, so you won't get flashed at 70mph
If the camera was forward facing on the gantry, or there was a mobile camera before the gantry and people sped up anticipating the NSL change, then they would get caught.
In both circumstances they are speeding.
This is exactly the same as your 30/40 scenario

It makes perfect sense.

Makes sense now yeah cheers for that The camera is detecting speeds after the gantry therefore NSL, so you won't get flashed at 70mph

If there is no camera on the penultimate gantry and the motorway is clear enough up to the final gantry (showing NSL) then accelerate away. The speed reduction is pointless.
For example the m60 at the Trafford centre its a 50 where I get on and then further up its NSL with a camera at the side and people are already at 70 before getting to it. Probably been doing this for almost a decade. Never had an envelope drop on the doormat.
Similarly, I am the "idiot" driving on the hard shoulder at the matrix posted limit "undertaking" because it is posted as a live lane, whilst many are bunched in lanes 1 -3/5.
Ironically, never boot it between gantries and then brake nor exceed the illuminated roundel speed. Sometimes I feel like the slowest person on the motorway when 40 is displayed,
Matrix managed motorways - a whole new way to confuse and dumbfound many motorists. The long term aim is undoubtedly road charging.

You won’t see a flash on the M60cameras, as they’re average speed cameras. As an aside, you post a lot about your fears on the road and adherence / non adherence to rules. You might want to read up on things a little and apply some common sense around your driving, as your blind obedience could cause you more trouble than breaking the odd rule here and there.
