Hi,

My car is reporting that it needs engine oil in 1200 miles.

Of course, this is a prompt to change the oil & filter, but is there anything else that needs doing for this prompt to be reset?

I'm about to sell my car so don't want to spend any more than the absolute minimum on it.

I took it for MOT the other day and asked the MOT centre, and they said it needs more than oil & filter change, but they weren't able to tell me exactly what.

It's a petrol car.

What sort of petrol car?

Can't really answer unless you tell us that?

Give the key to BMW dealer, they will read the key and advise what else needs doing and watch the $$$$$$ mount up!

Ah, so does that mean that the answer to my question is "it depends what the car thinks it needs, and there is a standard list of items that come under the heading of "engine oil service", and one of more of those will need doing depending on what the diagnostics says"?
Therefore, it will need someone with BMW diagnostics software to tell me what needs doing and reset the prompt?

It's a Mini Cooper 1.6 Roadster.

I thought there would be a standard checklist for all BMW petrol cars though - is that not the case?

Also, what is the difference between "Engine Oil" and "Vehicle Check" on the display? I thought "engine oil" just meant oil & filter change (and therefore the prompt would be reset if the engine oil was changed), and "vehicle check" was checking other stuff (what?). "Vehicle check" isn't due for another 12,000 miles.

That's good to know. So, if I got the MOT centre to change the oil, how would I go about resetting the display? I'm not aware of this "mileage reset button".

A 2017 M3 is very different to a 2001 318i, not only on what needs doing but how the services are done, one will be 12 months or 12k miles, the other will be condition based servicing, so it may need oil this month and then 5 weeks later need the bi annual check up and maybe fluids etc.

I don't know about Minis, I thought they also moved to condition based servicing on later models, it was around 2009 for BMWs from memory.

Have you got a service book?

You really need to say what year it is, a 2002 will be different to a 2015.

It's 2012.

I have a service book but it doesn't specify specific items at specific mileages, so I guess that means condition based servicing?

My car has separate prompts for brake fluid etc, which is another reason why I thought the engine oil prompt might be literally only engine oil.
