Mrs F, I dont see why not, although the 8 lb baby will soon develop a need for 8 tonnes of accessories to go with it, so something with a cavenous boot might be a starter.
I once walked through the "parent and child" parking area to see a Honda Beat parked there. Being nosy I thought I would look, but did think they had a cheek to be there, only to see a rearward facing child seat in the passenger seat.

My daughter came home from hosptial in the TVR and came out with me over the weekend in the VX, resplendant with cap and sunglasses.
(Added to which I got away with a blonde in the passenger seat and the Mrs knew about it!

Wedge/baby seat/for sale - enough said
Our's is due Aug 27th ish and the baby seat will go in the wedge along with the TVR bibs, baby grows etc from ebay

The problem is not just the babyseat! It's all the other junk you have to carry, like the pushchair, change of clothes, nappies etc! Suddenly you discover that having gone to Sainsburies the cars full before you have even done the shopping!
So in December it looks like I'll be getting a MPV or estate!

When my son was tiny he hated wind in his face/hair, and we could not even have the windows down... that changed (thankfully) and he loved it.
We came back from a blat, roof down, music cracked, to be told off by Mum, only for me to explain I was only following orders, and he had told me to remove the roof!

Many times I've opened up the boot of the Focus to load in the shopping, only to give up and sling it on the "spare" back seat. Estate car here we come...I (naiively) thought that a 306 would be plenty large enough for me, Mrs Plotloss (whose clothes arent that big) and Plottot.
But no.
Plottot takes up by far the most room when you have a stupidly bought independantly suspended disc brakes 3 wheel monstrosity (complete with carry cot AND car seat sub 6 months), change bag, food bag, travelcot, toys, bedding, complete change of everything. Then Mrs Plotloss seems to be able to fill a suitcase when we are just going to the end of the road.
I am left with just enough space in the drivers side door pocket for a pair of pants and a toothbrush.
So the bloody thing is going.
But no.
