Hi,

Need something cheap, that might even make me cheerful, for commuting to work. 13 miles each way, half country B roads and the rest stop-start traffic jams through town.

Is it realistic to think that a Mini-D or Yaris (the same early 1.4 diesel) or an A2 would all get at least 45 mpg?

Similarly, that a Focus 1.6 tdci or Golf would be 40 mpg?

Is there anything i'm missing that would do similar or better - and not require me to change gear?

Cheers!

Auris/Prius will do that all day long, if not significantly better, and are quiet and smooth into the bargain too.

Maintenance costs are minimal.

If it has to be a diesel & a fun drive then buy one of these:

A small petrol is what you need for that commute.

Need petrol - because the car itself will be cheaper? Are there small petrol cars with over 40 mpg in traffic?

Maintenance isn't really an issue - will do bits myself, then take my chances with spending as little as possible....

1.2 TSi 4 cylinder. Take your pick from
Skoda Fabia
VW Polo
Seat, Ibiza or Leon
Audi A1

The world is your lobster, as Arthur Daley would say.

Aygo, C1, 107 - available for sub £1k upwards, I was thrashing it everywhere (mainly because it doesn't move) when I was using it as a courtesy car, still got 60mpg...

There are thousands of deisel cars that do that commute every day and don't break.

Why are you focused on 40mpg,, you are doing 6.5k miles a year the difference between 30mpg is about 300 quid a year or 5 pound a week. I wouldn't buy a diesel. Something petrol and simple, ignis sport, swift.

Diesels don't like start stop traffic.

My Jazz is doing 48mpg brim to brim and it's mostly town bound, a lot of the trips are sub 10 minutes and the AC is always on. It's utterly reliable, well, aside from one headlight bulb in 4 years

Something with a small petrol engine and start stop will return better economy and a smoother drive than a diesel that never gets warm.

Need petrol for that sort of commute because modern diesels have dpf's and they clog if they don't have long runs out, they also detest short distances where they cannot get up to heat, this causes issues with the egr valve, so basically a small turbo'd petrol engine is far more suited to this sort of driving as it heats up quicker, still does pretty good on the mpg front and won't give you issues with a dpf.

I'd go for petrol with that sort of mileage!

Mrs Tidy bought a new R56 Mini Cooper in December 2006 that is now on 54K miles so mostly short trips, but the OBC is showing 41.2 mpg - and it's great fun to rag about!

I agree. Seems PH believes differently though - keep reading here that "petrol is best"!

£350 - and in my experience mileages always end up higher than expected. If the purchase price is similar, why not save the fuel money? Every little.....

In terms of the original question, anyone have thoughts on the mpg of the A2/Mini/Focus/Golf?

Been searching the forum, but can't find anything about urban mileages......
