Here's another stupid what bike thread.

I've not had a bike for a year and a half and finally need to pull my finger out – mostly because I suddenly have time to do a nice 10-day European roadtrip in September. My imaginary budget is modest (£8k maybe). I've narrowed it down to two bikes – one I've ridden and loved, another that I've lusted after since I got my licence in 2009.

What would you pick? I'm aiming to tour on it, but don't particularly care about being uncomfortable. More importantly it needs to be great for short weekend blasts around Surrey.

I could be swayed either way.

The options are:

Ducati 1198S
I've always hankered after one of these. My last bike was a 2013 Multistrada 1200S, and loved the savage torque and instant wallop. I quite fancy a more uncomfortable and less controllable version of that, basically. Also: I think touring on a sportsbike is fun, having done 3200 miles in 10 days on a Daytona 675 back in 2010.

Triumph Street Triple RS
Much newer, more reliable and more depreciatey than the Ducati. I rode one back in April against a Speed Triple RS and loved being able to use a few gears in their entirety. I also fell in love with the brakes, front-end feel and induction noise. Also, next March will mark 10 years since passing my bike test, when I started out on a… Street Triple. So it'll be quite nice to go full circle in a way but now have the skills to get more out of the bike.

Both cost the same to insure. And running costs don't bother me. It'll be living outside, but my Multistrada was fine with that under a cover. I'll be touring with a mate on a K1300R, so both will be far slower in a straight line… not that that particularly matters.

What'd you do? I'd be looking to keep it for three years or so. Both would be used examples. If you've owned or ridden either please pipe up with your experiences!

Yeah, Ducati.

You’ve been there and done it with the Street.

Ducati, all the way!

Street triple everyday - won’t boil you bits and is more fun on a day to day basis. Cheaper to run as well.

Leggy KTM Superduke GTs are down to £8.5k privately - quite an entertaining bike!

Neither.
The Ducati has a small fuel tank.
The Triumph does't have a fairing.

I'd go for blackbird/hayabusa/vfr800.

Do the tour, sell it, get a more sporty one for back home.

You raise good points but I’d rather have something that raises my pulse. I’ve done the Blackbird thing, but my most fun tours have been on sports bikes and nakeds. Also it’s a better story if I do it on something inappropriate wink

1198s all day, everyday.

I'm biased but the ownership of them is pretty special without many downsides at all.

Do it.

Between these two I'd go for 1198S as well.
But really I would not choose either, Ducati is hassle and Street is naked.
I'd go S1000RR or Japanese. Hayabusa sounds like fun and special (for a longer trip for sure).
Besides, you seem decided already anyway.

I've been playing with idea to get 1198S many a time, I like the way this bike looks more than any later Panigale. The tubular frame, the underseat exhaust... In the end my sensible side always wins.

I've always had a soft spot for these, but they always come out at the same price or more expensive than an 1198S. And they're not as pretty (not that I'm a huge tart or anything). And I have a decent relationship with my local Ducati dealers - KTM are quite far away. But I shall have a look…

1198s

Budget for a service and belts and enjoy one of the last bonkers bikes made.
Savage torque, propensity to wheelie everywhere and a lovely dry clutch.
Pop on a tank bag, Kriega tail pack and rucksack and enjoy every mile of the journey....
might not be as comfortable as many but far more memorable

If the Ducati is the one you've wanted for ages, and you're not fussed about any of its downsides, got to be that one. Enjoy your trip!

They'll be making Street Triples for years to come, 1198s, good ones will be increasingly harder to come by so do the Ducati thing now and buy my Street Triple off me in three years.

na, you are right, I'd still go for 1198S.

Have you ruled out a MT-10?

Seems a good halfway house.

I'm not so sure about that. I've got both a k1300s and a 1198, and the Duke feels much quicker.

Admittedly, it has been fettled a bit (blueprinted motor etc), but it's so much lighter than the BMW.

As for which to choose, I'd test ride the Ducati first. It's an acquired taste, IMHO, and doesn't suit everyone.

As above. Test ride the Duke as they are an acquired taste, they can be an effort to ride compared to the normal jap bikes etc. However, being it's only a weekend/short trip bike (most of the time), 1198 would get my vote even though the RS is mega.
