Automatic ZF 6 sp gearbox "clutch" slipping
Discussion
Hi everyone!
I have a Land Rover Discovery 3 2.7 HSE which I've had from new. It is one of 2 cars and we generally use it for towing a near 2 ton caravan (RV trailer for those over the pond). Sadly, due to lack of advice, the gearbox oil was never changed and January last year it had to have a rebuild.
It did have a problem almost immediately we got it back with the wheels "scrubbing" on full lock, and it was returned and, I understand, the oil in the box was changed. After that it drove fine. Due to elderly relative issues, on getting it back we didn't tow again with it until June that year. On the return trip we left Gloucester where we had stayed overnight and drove for about 40 miles on motorway (freeway) before we hit a queue. We were in the queue for about 40 minutes, going very slowly, and eventually decided to leave the motorway. On doing so, I notice the car was over reving just as if it had a manual gearbox and the clutch was slipping. Also I noticed that if I used Sport mode, the gear numbers on the dash display were missing! We stopped for a break after about an hour and on resuming all was OK again.
It wasn't used again for towing until this year, when it towed OK both ways for two holidays, both 4 hour trips each way across the UK. Unfortunately on the 3rd trip the "slipping" occurred again, and then the dreaded judder. The box is back with the re-manufacturers but they seem to be having an issue working out why it has failed. It has a fault code registered "P0741 Toque Converter clutch solenoid - circuit performance or stuck off". Can anyone on here could assist with, please?

With a technical problem like this, always put the error message into Google, correct the typo and see what comes back.

My money is on a problem with the transmission fluid, perhaps the wrong type or filled too little / too much
