Any people cut (clip) their own hair ?

Used to have a full head of curly hair, but in the last 10 years it's massively thinned out, and when i go for a haircut now they just use clippers and i have a grade 3 all over.
Wife suggested i just buy some nice clippers and do it myself at home, but that just feels a bit 'odd'. Have always gone to get a haircut, so don't feel to confident about just clipping it myself, or do most blokes with thin/short hair do that these days ?
Any 'don't do this" or "look out for" 's also welcome
Yep, I cut it with scissors when I have it a bit longer or or clip it myself if I'm going through a phase of having it shorter.
My hair is curly/wavy so I can get away with not having a precise, uniform length.
I seem to have just about got the technique right of not leaving any bald patches whether using scissors or clippers.
(Or at least people are too polite to tell me if there are any that I can't see!)

I just have a number 3 all over, still go to an old fashioned barber, none of this hipster "Beards R Us" malarkey and like you have wondered about these trimmer things.
Only warning I could give concerned a colleague who had a home done No2. Out no sniggering at the back, behave.
Anyway one day he had just done the cut, or rather his wife had. Job finished, he ran his hand over the result and asked if she could just tidy up the top.
Unfortunately she had started taking the clipper apart to clean it, had taken off the number 3 comb, quickly plugged it back in, you can see where this is going.
He turned up on the Monday with a number 0 all over. Oops.
Only warning I could give concerned a colleague who had a home done No2. Out no sniggering at the back, behave.
Anyway one day he had just done the cut, or rather his wife had. Job finished, he ran his hand over the result and asked if she could just tidy up the top.
Unfortunately she had started taking the clipper apart to clean it, had taken off the number 3 comb, quickly plugged it back in, you can see where this is going.
He turned up on the Monday with a number 0 all over. Oops.
Spend a few quid on some rechargable Wahl clippers, do it yourself whenever you feel like you look a bit scruffy. It's been my policy over the last 10 years or so and must have saved me thousands in pointless barber visits.
Just remember to moisturise - aloe vera gel is great.

These days I just go for the grade 0 by choice.

I have a zero cut all over and do it once a week.
It's a bit scary at first but it's child's play really and takes about 5 minutes once you've done it a few times.
I used to get the g/f to check I'd got it all and hadn't left any long bits but you start to be able to mentally map your head and where you have been so a check isn't needed anymore.
A lot less hassle than going to the barber and you save a fortune.

The rotating head makes it a doddle to get a neat and even shave all over. I also go as short as possible (I think it's a 0.5 with these).

I do my own too, but occasionally go to a cheapo turkish barber when I want all the edges tidied up properly 
Question: I regularly run a number 3 all over the sides and back but prefer to keep the top longer (just looks better IMO, it camouflages the massive size of my cranium) but a number 6 is still too short really. Is there such a thing as, say, a number 8 comb?

That was the main reason I started doing it myself, travel there, sit waiting for 20 minutes, five minutes in chair, pay ££, travel home with bits of hair down my "kneck" shower.I have a zero cut all over and do it once a week.

Yes, I'd be doing it myself. Well, to be honest, getting Mrs PB to do it.
It was your wife's idea OP, can't she do it for you? Not to belittle hairdressers, but that's the simplest cut to do. We all took it in turns to do each other's with the Wahl I bought from Argos when I was at Uni.
As has been said already though, careful with the comb attachment. It slipped off once when I was shaving one mate's hair and he had to have 0 all over. Though I did try and argue that he didn't need an 0 as he's a foot taller than me and it was on the top of his head so who was going to see it?!

I've been doing a 0 all over for years now. I have saved a fortune on barber's visits, and I always hated going anyway. The more so when I started losing my hair and nothing deserving of the name "haircut" was really possible.
I started out with guards, but as my hairline has receded more I just think it looks better without.
