Hey.
I may be getting a 2003 X5 which has been converted to LPG and wondered how well they run on it.
The car is the 3l 230bhp model
What kind of performance does this model have, and would it be lessened with LPG?
Thanks

Performance is a bit woody, but you'd be a sap not to get one daresay barking mad!

Ha well done!
I realised the mistake then couldn't edit it!

Seriously though guys, any good? Lack in performance? Increased economy?

I'm stumped. Won't the log take up space in the trunk? Yes, it'll sap power and you might pine for the V8. Do you particularly want LPG? You might find you can't see the wood for the trees if you narrow your search. Branch out a little.

You'll soon be sycamore of these j-oaks.

Didn't think you'd twig until much later smile

Fuel will be cheaper although economy on LPG is slightly worse. LPG apparently makes it feel a bit more lively so hopefully it will be a positive.

Is the 3l petrol a good unit, what's the X5 like in general?

The 3l engine is a great free-revving lump but, in my humble opinion, better suited to smaller, sportier models. I've never tried it in an X5, but I fear it might feel 'adequate' at best. If I had to have an X5, I'd be going derv or petrol V8 - depending on mileage requirements.

The X5 is big and complicated. Comfortable, of course. But I wouldn't buy one expecting it to be cheap to maintain.

Got me stumped. I've never driven anything with lpg or log (oh wait, actually I did have a wood burner in a previous house)

Friend of mine had an 02 plate X5 3 litre petrol for a few months. a lot of car for the money. He paid not much over a grand for it. It was fast enough to keep up with traffic. Fuel consumption was very poor - normally around 18mpg, and that is in a relatively rural area. He managed to get over 20mpg just once. Insurance was expensive, too.

It never actually broke down to the point where he couldn't complete a journey, but quite a few things went wrong. Door handles snapped, window switches failed, suspension compressor died, clonking from the front driveshafts. Secondhand or pattern parts from eBay made DIY repairs relatively cheap, and he managed to get all his money back when he sold it.

I think these have reached the point where most owners can't afford to get them repaired or serviced professionally, so be careful.

Well I've currently got an E60 530d, lovely car but very thirsty so I was thinking changing to a car with LPG may be my answer.

I really can't see an LPG X5 being any cheaper on fuel than than a 530D.

What do you get to the gallon out of the E60? I had an E61 525D. It averaged 39mpg over 3 years, true consumption measured brim to brim.

Well changing to an X5 that'll manage circa 18mpg isn't the answer. Even allowing for the lower price of LPG, your monthly fuel savings are going to be negligible (if not negative).

We managed a consistent 32mpg-ish out of our E61 530d xdrive, so I'd have thought a healthy 2wd version, without all the extra gubbins and weight, should get mid-30s without much bother.

About 25mpg.
It's had many things changed to help it even achieve that figure!
