A couple of weeks ago I had to take out a leaking injector, gave it a good clean ect and put it back in the car. the injector itself wasn't leaking, it just had problems with the seal it was supposed to sit on.
anyways, after putting the injector back in I couldn't get the thing running, so used easy start. Once started I left it to tick over for a few minutes. after that I revved it up and noticed a LOT of smoke coming out from the exhaust. after a few minutes of hard reving the smoking wasn't that bad.
I took the car for a 120 mile trip, mostly motorway, and noticed the smoke for the whole 120 miles, it pumped out more smoke when I put my foot down.
Can anyone tell me what the problem is? It wasn't smoking before taking the injector out.

Diesel? Petrol? What engine? Does the exhaust contain petrol/diesel? Any engine fault codes relevant to fuel/air leaks? Did you need to disturb any part of the crankcase breather system when you replaced the injector?

It's the 307 diesel with the missing seal.

If it wasn't doing that before then you need to retrace what you've done as the answer is there.

What sort of smoke; coolant (white, smells sweet), unburnt diesel (white, smells of diesel), oil (blue) or partially burnt diesel (black)?

The material the injectors tips are made from is quite soft. If you have gone over it with a wire brush or coarse emery tape you have most likely altered the size and/or shape of the holes in the tip. This sends the spray pattern all over the place, causing the engine to smoke.

I took your advice and have found the Injector is still leaking. I'll take it out, again, clean it up, again and re seat it. I'll use my torque wrench this time, although it is recommended to not tighten to recommended torque settings!

Just used a flat head screwdriver to gently get the soot/carbon off of it. the tip was happily squirting from all six holes after cleaning- I used wd40 with the straw down the tip. all six had the same spray pattern

Three of the spray holes were clogged, if I remember correctly. so i'm thinking the cars computer compensated for the blocked ones by pumping out more fuel to the unblocked ones, and that the cars computer needs to learn all six are now unblocked?
I've read about needing to code-in a replacement injector. This isn't a replacement injector but maybe I still need to recode it? Where does one get an injector coder from, if that's the case?
