M4 - Some Observations
Discussion
Travelled from J17 to J10 and back today. Here's what I noticed:
1. Going eastbound at around 8:30 in torrential rain, there was no sign of any camera vans. I suspect this is because they cannot get the range in poor weather to nab people before they get spotted. Once again, this just enforces the "revenue first" attitude. The conditions were IMHO NOT suitable for doing 70. Some traffic cops could have sorted out the tailgaters, inappropriate speed etc.
2. No sign of any traffic patrols. Normally I would expect to see at least one in each direction over that distance.
3. Coming back westbound at around 12:30, no camera vans either.
4. Lots of idiots tailgating in both directions. Lots of idiots on mobiles. Lots of middle lane morons.
5. If you pay attention to the road well ahead of you, I think you can see the vans before they can see you. There are only a few suitable bridges for them (a lot of the bridges are pedestrian bridges).
6. I spent a lot of time staring at the speedo.
7. I got much better MPG than usual and the overall journey time was negligably longer.
8. There were a LOT of people speeding up to 90 between the bridges. IMHO a steady 90 is much safer than 70-90-70-90-70-90-70-90.
