probably been done to death, but forgive me, I'm sure there are lots of views

I'm in the position to think about buying myself a Gt3

i've previously owned a 996 GT3, a 968 CS and a 72 2.7 hotrod. No Porsche in the garage currently...I have an F80 M3 which is frankly mega for the money it cost (bought 2.5 years old).

The car would not be a daily...but equally it cant be too extreme...I might do 3-5 trackdays a year as well as a few roadtrips, so mainly a road car. probably would be driven 3-5k miles a year

It was a mistake to sell the 996.2 GT3 value wise, but at time I needed the cash. I loved that car and never once felt it was too extreme, in fact as I got to know it I was surprised by the liberties you could take with it...never forget going round a streaming wet Silverstone GP and being amazed by how much grip there was still was. Although, after some bump road action, having to restick the front splitter and buy new brake ducts was I suppose tiresome.

On the other hand I'm a tad worried that the M3 has spoiled me with all its newness, technology and ready access to 400 bhp and 400 lb /ft

£100k is a significant amount of money for me and whilst I'm not per se looking to make money on it, I'd rather it didnt depreciate, its not an investment though I want to drive it and have fun...hence the GT3 as I imagine most agree, is the sweet spot

Anyway...seems to me for £100-110 k ish there are 3 options

997.1 GT3 RS with 40k miles. feels like the safest home for the money but most likely to have been caned and v good ones are more than this
997.2 GT3 with buckets and probably lower miles...prefer the look and maybe a better road car
991 GT3 2014 vintage...sort of the common sense purchase but not analogue or manual. And have they bottomed yet?

want minimum hassle factor / maximum fun...dont mind sensible running costs but dont want the dreaded David "£10k refresh"

minded to think 997.2 hits the spot

thoughts gratefully received as well as any top tips on individual cars for sale or coming up. As a pointer the red 997.2 at RPM is perfect although not really my preferred colour

Hi there,

I have just gone through this very equation and ended up with a 6.2 GT3 comfort. Which is not where I expected to be.

By all means if you want to try something different maybe stick with a 7.1 onwards but after speaking to some people about not wanting to invest, but not wanting to loose my shirt, and analogue vs. digital blah blah blah and even coming down to parts and insurance prices, the 6.2 made most sense to me.

IMO the 991.1 just to me has some way to fall due to PDK only and the engine issues. Just look at the amount for sale.

I think the 7.2 is a great car and was my other choice but they seem to be extremely slow selling at just over 100k, many seem to have few miles so what will actually using it do for values, and a few people I spoke to think the 991.2 manual prices will soften over the next year to about the 140k level and start to put pressure on these longer term.

The 7.1 is an arguably safer place to put your ~80k+ (for a nice one). But it seems it is not as good as a .2 so prices may trend 20-25% to that. Not sure I've seen an RS at 100 but there you go, if you have then seems like a deal.

For me I think the 996 as the first of the breed and the bridge in feel between the aircooled and "modern" cars gives it enough space to appreciate in its own right, and some people are already asking (but getting?) 100k for early CS cars, and some of those not ultra-low mile options.... They seem to be old enough that people buy on condition not miles so you can actually use them and not loose your shirt if you keep the condition up. Relatively low production numbers seem to reinforce that view (to me anyway).

An arguably more capable, faster .2 comfort seemed to me to be the best balance of use and enjoy vs. some space for appreciation (or at worst standstill) after a few years.

yep 997.2 GT3 would be my choice or make a 997.2 GTS to your Spec £70k plus £30k on it imo would be a nicer road car with a lot of trick bits but not a GT3 which to some is a must have in name alone.

If an RS is your thing, could be a good bet.

I am not convinced how much more fun I would be having vs a cooking 7.1 and I prefer the understated looks of the non-RS. But it looks on the money if it checks out.

If you have a concern about losing money, then I would suggest buy LHD from outside the U.K.

I am in a similar situation. Looking to move up from a GTS.

The market has been stagnant for sometime. Some GT3’s have been on and off PH for well over a year. Supposedly sold then Re-appear 6months later......most not moving....what does this tell you?

Look at the German market for comparison.

Like for like 997/991 regular Carrera S, similar spec/mileage.......similar prices.

997.2GT3 pricing for example.......there is a circa £35k price difference for comparable clubsport (which is what I am looking for......to drive/track/drift/enjoy).........ridiculous.

Since the market turned circa 2012 with the scare of no manual box, no motorsport derived GT3 engine, prices have shot up. Lucky for those already in the club :-)

In today’s market, we now have more GT3’s than ever with manual options and motorsport derived engines......looking at the reviews, the manual box is sweeter than ever also we now have an amazing motorsport engine revving to 9000rpm.

My Heart says.......you only live once just buy one.....i ‘almost’ have the cash :-)

Head says......we are long overdue a correction.....don’t get drawn into to frenzy.

I for one will continue to enjoy my GTS. Driving/tracking/drifting. Waiting for the U.K GT3 market to correct itself, I will no doubt lose money on my GTS but I’m thinking the GT3 market has further to fall.

Just my thoughts on the value side the things.

I think a club sport 997.2 is the perfect balance for road....with a bit of track driving now and again.

Nice situation to be in. At least it seems you are buying for the right reason.......to drive the damn thing. Not stick it In a garage hoping it rises in value.

Happy Hunting.......even better Driving ;-)

Agree with DappaD - it's simple economics, and used GT3's aren't exactly flying off the shelf at the current advertised prices....

Oh and forgot to answer the question: 7.2 for me followed by 7.1 RS. No interest in PDK.

It's Brexit. Everyone is on pause. Once that's done, any correction will be temporary (relatively speaking). Most of those with 100k to spend on a sports car will still have it after it's all settled down, difference is they'll have more confidence to spend it.

You could wait and see, and still be waiting and seeing in 3yrs. Or if you are buying a driver and a keeper what difference does it make in the long term if there is a 10-20k price correction, only to swing back in your favour over the longer term.

That's several years less when you could be driving one. We are not here for ever.

Not a stupid answer. All luxury cars (elective purchase) moving at lower volumes this year. Housing market slowed down too. People waiting and seeing because of uncertainty.

Either way sensibly priced good cars still selling, but at 2016 prices not inflated 2018 ones.

I respect your opinion, but go speak to some people in the trade and see what they think.

Meanwhile let's not hijack this nice fella's thread.

markets on it's arse because we don't have a county with any leadership.
And we have a over supply of cars. the fad of this overs market was from people who only BUY NEW LTD ED CARS TO MAKE MONEY not 2nd hand.
High PCP rates and a over supply of cars has killed all the car market, Greed and investors has killed the overs priced cars.

Neither has anything to do with brexit .

We could do with some Trump ness ;-) the US economic growth hits fastest rate since 2014..

While the UK has no leadership :-( and no opposing party with any leadership qualities either !

£100,000 today is a GT3, come March next year it may be 300 cans of baked beans and a pint of milk, so I totally understand waiting to see what's going to happen.

However, the flip side is that we'll doubtless take further devaluations to the pound the closer to the 29th we get, with likely another big drop when we actually do leave* - which would make the 100k that is, today, worth 112k Euro worth many fewer.

Final thing there is whether people who can afford a GT3 start liquidating goods ahead of emigrating to a country where you can still buy food - might be a few to be snapped up.

I have watched and tracked 991.1 GT3 prices quite carefully, here is a graph of OPC pricing, currently 15 cars for sale. The GT3 means no CS option. CS cars were not fetching much of a premium now seem to attract a bit (But a lot want the sport buckets and PCCB). The average has come down but the average mileage on these cars has risen too. Realistically £10k drop over the last 12m.

The Green line was my target area not super low but sub 10k miles

They are bottoming and showing some price resilience as .2's have dropped with big numbers for sale at OPC's. Right now 15 .1GT3's at OPC's 12m ago that was nearer 8-9. They might settle a bit more but they are selling. One or two have been around a long time

for most people nothing will happen, 85% cars are on PCP with a GFV and every one who is in work will still be in work, in fact unemployment is coming down month on month.
life will go on for 90% people the same.

Investors might sell assets and drop the price of rare cars, well that's a good thing imo. I also might be able to walk into a Rolex shop and be told my wait for a Daytona is now less than 10 years !

£ should go up as the EU is in a st storm it's self and will fall apart within the next 5 years imo.
We got out early, shame 5 million extra people got in !!!

Hard to respond to your post it's so divorced from reality.

GT3 prices - it's a toss up, if there's a GE in September and we get a new, reverse-Brexit government then I'd expect confidence to come back into the market.

If May keeps hanging on and drives us over the cliff all bets are off. If you've got the 100k in cash, and you are not in a job or industry that is exposed then it might be best to wait and take advantage of the situation.

opposite would happen in that case and would kill the country.
