Stuck in a time warp
Discussion
Following on from the getting old thread and the comb over thread, do you know anyone, or are you, stuck in a time warp?
Does it happen to everyone at some point? You know, when you say 'if I get like that, shoot me'.
For example, my dad 88. Grew up with rationing and is the biggest hoarder going. There are more empty boxes and tins in his house than the local landfill. He still lives like it's 1952. Women should know their place and look after and obey their men. He smokes a pipe and wears a hat, parks where he likes, irrespective of yellow lines or consideration for others. Indicators are optional, people should know where he is going by his road position apparently. Lights, fans, etc get switched off at traffic lights.
He gets stuff from the local furniture store 'on approval' to decide if he wants to keep it. He gets the local electrical appliance man to fix or supply him with a new washing machine, even though the new machine is a cheap brand it still costs twice what it's worth because the man takes the old one away and installs the new one. He then tips the chap a couple of pounds. Literally a couple of pounds. It's not like he's hard up either. He has an index linked teacher's pension and his house is his own.
And his spacial awareness! Non existent. Stops right outside a shop door, bottom of an escalator, etc.
I'd like to think that I'll never get like that. I'm no technophobe, keep up with modern technology, etc. But is it coming my way?

The people who lived in this house I saw the other day are certainly living in a time warp. Yellow bathroom suite anyone?

Surely it comes to everyone? There comes a point where entire aspects of modern life leave you behind, or you leave them behind. I'm 43. There's plenty of stuff younglings obsess over that I simply don't get such as watching other people playing video games, youtube 'stars', most social media etc. No doubt there'll be plenty more in future.
Fine by me.

This is interesting I've noticed this with the elderly, I think stopping in a door way, maybe having a conversation there is (subconsciously) a way to get people to notice them, PositronicRay said:

I recently read somewhere that your music tastes often stall around your mid/late twenties.
I think it comes to us all if we’re not careful.
As above, there’s some elements of Social Media I just can’t bring myself to give a s
t about, my attitudes despite being largely born of the P.C. mad 90s seem to be completely at odds with those of my Son’s, he says I’m intolerant, I think you just can’t be something because you want to be - seems even prepubescent Boys and Girls can indentify as Girls or Boys if they want to and if the world doesn’t bend to suit, we’re intolerant dinosaurs. You can’t identify as a different race though, in fact if you attempt to integrate cultures by taking an aspect of another culture that’s ‘cultural appropriation’. I think that’s going to bite them (my Kid’s generation) in the arse down the road.
Anyway, I may have gone slightly off piste there.

My maternal grandmother seemed to stall some how. She didn't ever bother to understand or use a mobile phone for example, let alone a computer. She lead a full life in any case.
My paternal grandmother is on instagram in her mid 80s, uses facebook etc. It keeps her in touch with her friends family. Most importantly I think she keeps learning and generally takes the positives out of new technologies.
It's easy to be dismissive of new things I suppose.

My old man has gone polar opposite. Every gadget and toy her can get, drones, alexa, laser engraver, illiegal digi-box for streaming UK TV to Spain (porn). You name it, hes got it. New car in each country every couple of years and at least 2 if not 3 nice holidays at a time.
he even bought a mini-scuba-sub thing so he can "dive in luxury!!""

My Grandparents both in their 80s have both got smart phones and use Facebook etc on their PC to stay in touch with friends and family. My Grandma who loves playing Bridge (the card game) now plays it online sometimes and has entered into these online tournaments. They are happy to upgraded their TV recordable box and are willing to learn to use a new better system, etc.
I work amongst the general public and when speaking to older people (say 60+) it makes me sad when they say "oh no I'm too old for that" in reference to modern items and tech etc. No one is too old if you have the willingness to learn and to be shown by someone. Some of these older folks way too dismissive of things .....Stuck in their ways eh.

My step father is 61 and he is always up to date with technology. He worked in Silicon Valley years ago, was head of engineering before retiring at 57 and loves all the tech in his new BMW. My mother is 58 and is polar opposite. We had to show here how to download WhatsApp and how to use it.

The crying shame is someone will rip that lot and skip it. In 40 yrs time they'll be lambasted by the current generation, seeking authentic original features and mid century chic. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prop...
